June 22, 2026 – Mary Peltola has launched what may be one of the more curious arguments of the 2026 U.S. Senate race.
In a recent social media post, the former congresswoman wrote: “No one from the Lower 48 is coming to save us. We need someone in the Senate who’s actually from Alaska fighting for Alaska, every single day. Alaska first. No exceptions.”
The target is obvious. Peltola is running against incumbent US Sen. Dan Sullivan, who moved to Alaska over a quarter century ago after serving in the military and built a life and career in the state.
But Peltola’s argument raises a larger question: What exactly qualifies someone to represent Alaska?
If birthplace is now the standard, Alaska suddenly has a problem. Some 60% of Alaskans were not born here.
Peltola’s own father, Ward H. Sattler, was not born in Alaska. He moved north from Nebraska. Under the logic of her post, he was one of those people “from the Lower 48.”
So was the late Don Young, whom Peltola repeatedly praised during her congressional campaign in 2022. Young was born in California and raised in rural northern California before moving to Alaska in 1959. He has the biggest port in the state named after him. Sen. Ted Stevens was born in Indiana; now the biggest airport in the state is named for him.
In fact, many of the people who helped build modern Alaska were not born here. They came from somewhere else. Peltola herself graduated from high school in Colorado.
The pipeline builders. The military families. The commercial fishermen. The miners. The entrepreneurs. The teachers. The nurses. The homesteaders. Generations of Alaskans arrived from other states and other countries and made Alaska their home.
That is one reason Peltola’s message may sound elitist and exclusionary to most.
The implication is that there are “real” Alaskans and everyone else. The fortunate few who happened to be born here apparently possess a special legitimacy that those who moved here can never fully acquire.
That’s a form of gatekeeping that runs contrary to Alaska’s history.
Alaska has always been a place of newcomers.
The territory was purchased from Russia in 1867. Statehood did not arrive until 1959. Much of Alaska’s economic development was built by people who chose Alaska rather than being born here. Some stayed for a few years. Others stayed for life. Their contributions were no less valuable because they arrived on an airplane, a military transport, a fishing boat, or a moving van.
Even America’s Founders would have failed Peltola’s apparent test. None were born in the United States because the United States did not yet exist. Their legitimacy came from what they built and the principles they defended, not from the location of the delivery room.
The Constitution itself does not require senators to be born in the states they represent. It requires them to be at least 30 years old, a citizen for nine years, and an inhabitant of the state when elected.
The reason is simple. The founders understood that loyalty comes from commitment, not birthplace.
By Peltola’s standard, millions of Americans who moved to new states, built businesses, raised families, paid taxes, served in uniform, and became leaders in their communities would always remain outsiders.
That’s not the Alaska most people know.
Alaskans have traditionally judged people by whether they show up, work hard, contribute to their communities, and stand up for the state when it matters. They have not generally divided residents into first-class and second-class citizens based on where their parents happened to live when they were born.
Peltola is free to campaign on her Alaska roots. Voters can decide how much that matters.
But suggesting that someone who has spent decades serving Alaska is somehow less qualified because he arrived from another state says more about the weakness of the argument than it does about the person being targeted.

Nonsense Downing. You hear what you want to hear.
“No one from the Lower 48 is coming to save us. We need someone in the Senate who’s actually from Alaska fighting for Alaska, every single day. Alaska first. No exceptions.”
Please interpret that for us, Evan.
Peltola is reminding voters that someone from Alaska is more likely to understand Alaskan issues than someone from Outside. My claim is quite different from Downing’s article title: “Peltola says only Alaska-born individuals have a right to be elected”. See how that’s different? Downing can sniff out a socially divisive truffle from miles away.
“Downing can sniff out a socially divisive truffle from miles away.” So Mary drops a “socially divisive truffle” and pointing it out is what upsets you?
Please define “from Alaska”, Evan.
He’s dodging, because he doesn’t live here, anymore. Its not his circus or monkeys
PelTOOLa is the last person I’d look at for any decision that best serves all Alaskans. She proved that during her last RCV won tenure. Actually surprised that she hasn’t really played the “only brown skin can play” card that hard..yet
Next Peltola will say that only Alaska born citizens are to get the permanent fund dividends.
To hell with the Zoebel’s, you know, the attorneys that sued the state when PFD amounts would be based on the amount of time each person was in Alaska.
Real Alaskans are not the take the money and run type, Alaskans are the best stewards of our resources, fisheries, wildlife and to hell with foreign owned pebble, high seas trawlers.
But I have to vote republican because we are pro founding fathers, fiscal conservatives, strong on borders and democrats are anti law and order, citizens, military and founding fathers.
“democrats are anti law and order”. Which party murdered Renee Good and Alex Petti? Which party sponsored an insurrection and attack on the constitution? Which party broke ten billion promises like “America First” and “No New Wars”? Demolished the historic East Wing of the White House without following laws and process? What is the party that broke international laws by bombing Venezuelan fishing boats? Which party is guilty of war crimes?
Evan,
You’ve attempted to cover a lot of ground here by conflating numerous subjects, as is your way.
You spelled martyred wrong, Renee Good and Alex Petti were martyrs for the Democratic Party. In a despicable and horribly thoughtout out plan Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries shutdown the government after their deaths.
The Puerto Rican Nationalist Party was complicit in the last insurrection and attack on the US Capitol in 1954.
10 billion promises is a lot to try and cover in this comment section, needless to say if politicians of every political party routinely break their promises…same for the war crimes nonsense.
“……….Which party murdered Renee Good and Alex Petti?………”
Law enforcement officers shot Good and Petti in the line of duty. There has been no murder convictions, and I find no mention of any party membership by the officers.
In another world, it would be called suicide by cop, literally forcing law enforcement to kill you to protect themselves. Congratulations, Evan, you’ve outdone yourself this time around. Cheers –
Good and Pretti? The democrat party was responsible more than anyone; democrat politicians fully encouraged them to start physical altercations with LE officers. Insurrection? maybe you’re referring to the 274 FBI operatives who led innocent protesters into the white house. Or maybe your friends in antifa who were recently convicted on terrorism charges in Texas for bombing and shooting at police officers. Clinton, Bush, Obama all promised peace and then started wars. “…historic east wing…” What about your antifa friends again, who seem to enjoy destroying historic statues and burning historic Christian churches? I’m sure you’re fine with destroying those historic artifacts. Venezuelan “fishing” boats? You mean those speedboats that carried large containers of some unknown substances, and NO FISHING EQUIPMENT WHATSOEVER? Right, the DEA is just picking out random boats, they have no idea where they even came from…….. Well, Evan, at least you’re with the right party. The party of LIES.
But dollars to donuts, on the national level, she’ll green light every single illegal alien voter and not make a single attempt to restrict their voting.
Another disingenuous piece of “journalism” from SD. C’mon, you’re really reaching here to make Peltola’s comment mean something different than what it obviously means. Go back and read what Peltola actually wrote: “No one from the Lower 48 is coming to save us. We need someone who’s actually from Alaska.”
Peltola never said “born in Alaska.” SD invented that, then spent 900 words attacking a position Peltola never took. “Actually from Alaska” is how we talk about identity and commitment. By any honest reading, Don Young was from Alaska. Ted Stevens was from Alaska. They moved here, put down roots, became part of the community, and made it home. That’s being from Alaska in my book, and it has nothing to do with who’s got a 574 on their Social Security card. And, for the record, I am not saying Sullivan did not move here, put down roots, become part of the community, etc., he did.
Stop, just stop, with the yellow journalism, SD. There are many other things you could criticize Peltola for, stop inventing new ones to whip up anger among your fawning followers.
Does Senator Dan S. Sullivan also qualify as “from Alaska”, Bill?
Yup, which is exactly what I said. “And, for the record, I am not saying Sullivan did not move here, put down roots, become part of the community, etc., he did.”
If you need me to be more explicit, yes, I do believe Senator Sullivan qualifies as “from Alaska”, irrespective of being born in Ohio.
Let me help with her salad mess. She meant not from Anchorage. The best thing about Anchorage is that it is close to Alaska.
Since you clearly have a different read on her message Bill, would you mind enlightening us with her “real” meaning. Thank you!
Ironically however in my opinion you just made Suzanne’s argument.
If as you say ANYONE who has come here and stayed for years making it home (like Senator Dan and his family) IS an Alaskan, then Mary’s whole spiel makes no sense. Who is she railing against? The felon in prison and his mother???
Mary is clearly not after those two, but her primary opponent “Ohio Dan” as he is know in her circles……
Hmmm(?) …
Does this mean that only Alaska born individuals pay the local taxes?
What class of citizen would be considered if one wasn’t born in Alaska?
Would Alaskan laws only be applicable to Alaskan born individuals?
Are hunting and fishing licenses only available to Alaskan born individuals?
If Lisa classifies herself as a Republican, shouldn’t she at least be honest and fully support the GOP Platform? OR(!!!), is this another misrepresentation // misinformation (sleight of hand) of willful – blatant FRAUD?
Sure seems ‘wacky’ but, that’s what we get with bot Lisa & Mary … Hyper Emotional Estrogen!
The little squaw.ker from Bethel never fails to show her ignorance. Her continued smoke signals to all Natives and left-wing Democrats dissipate quickly when the winds of reason and logic blow through. The little squaw.ker delivers an old Bush message that non-Natives, urbanites and suburbanites aren’t entitled like she is, therefore they shouldn’t have extra-preferential rights such as she does. Her vision of what Alaskans are isn’t compatible with reality. Money coming your way, Dan.
I” f you can’t win legitimately, BAN your opposition!”its the totalitarian way

Uh….criminal Hunter Biden…..pardoned by daddy Joe. Daddy Joe receiving kickbacks from China and Burisma for years. Daddy Joe sent AG Merrick Garland and his thugs from the DOJ on a major witch hunt against Trump. Corrupt prosecutors from NY and Georgia filing false charges against Trump. Biden’s FBI using electronic corals to chase down J6 protestors. Trump’s personal residence raided on bogus charges. 2020 election fraud.
And who’s party has all the corrupt Democrats collaborating with the corrupt media?
.
No wonder Trump won in 2024 by a landslide.
Trump won back every battleground state in 2024, the same states he lost in 2020. MI, PA, GA, AZ, NV, WI.
And the media still calls 2020 election fraud “false claims.”
Our greatest president is a FIGHTER.
That’s it? THAT’S all you’ve got?
E Singh: please co keep in with your nonsense posts. They do nothing but point out how out of touch you are. And, frankly you do more to help conservative Alaskans than anyone else. You are an accurate reflection of why so many people are becoming conservative. Please keep it up.
Unfortunately for conservatives, they are stepping AWAY from the party of small government and freedom because of one despot. Trump is the Republican party now and Trump is poison.
I guess I should feel special and privileged, having spent my formative months in a very small village prior to moving to the big(ger) city of Fairbanks. Might have been better off in the village, but I think mom didn’t want to go thru another cold Interior winter with me and my (older) Irish twin, esp having to clean double the diapers! And Fairbanks was plenty cold enough in Winter 60/61. At least they had coal for heat. And running water. And indoor potties.
.
All the modern amenities! Party line on the phone? At least they HAD a phone in Fairbanks. The passage of time brings both good and bad. The ascendency of Progressivism = BAD. (Some) technological and medical wonders = Good, though only to a point.
.
Politics? Probably not much worse today than it was then; it’s simply that it’s more public now, as communication channels outpace what the politicos spew from behind their mindless, thoughtless gums.
.
As I started with, I should feel privileged that Mary would consider me a suitable candidate to run for office in Alaska, based purely upon my place of birth. However, I DO have a mind and no desire to submit myself to the corrupting influence of the denizens of any legislative body, be it local, state, or (God forbid), federal. Caio!
.
I remain intent on saving one soul at a time…starting with mine!
Well Mary Peltola, IF the candidate has to be from Alaska then I am SURE you would agree ALL funding for Alaskan candidates is to come from Alaska too. Meaning no SorosSchumer bucks for you.
This is the problem with right-wing media bias. The headline blasts one thing, but nowhere is there a quote from Mary claiming only Alaska born residents should be elected. Totally made up fake news. But so many readers have swallowed the fluff…
@Bob1,
Mary can’t remember what she said previously. And when she does speak, she reads from handwritten notes prepared for her by some Democrat. That’s what Bethel does to people over time. The marijuana is the best in Alaska though. Brought in straight from South America.
As well as the fentynal via Venezuelan “fishing” boats…LOL
