April 30, 2026 – Thousands of Alaskans got the same text message this week, blasted out by one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable and shameless operatives: “Selfless move from Mary Peltola.”
The sender of the text? None other than James Carville, the longtime political strategist whose “Ragin’ Cajun” fingerprints are on decades of bare-knuckle national campaigns.

It was a full-court press by Carville, who called Alaska the Democrats’ “VERY BEST CHANCE” to take back the U.S. Senate majority and urged recipients to open their wallets before an end-of-month deadline.
But strip away the fundraising language, and something else comes into focus: Alaska is the most valuable chess piece on the board for the Democrats. Sen. Chuck Schumer has also made this clear.
Carville has been remarkably blunt about how he sees power in Washington. In recent remarks, he openly advocated that if Democrats gain full control, they should make Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico states, because that would help the electoral calculation. And he advocates for expanding the Supreme Court to 13 justices — just like Mary Peltola does. His reasoning is raw politics: Just do it, don’t debate it, and lock in the advantage.
Alaskans are told by Carville that Mary Peltola’s Senate run is “selfless.”
Selfless for whom? Because from Carville’s vantage point, this race is not about Alaska’s interests, but about naked DC political power.
That’s precisely the kind of top-down political push that Americans for Prosperity Alaska warns against. Our philosophy runs in the opposite direction, away from centralized control in Washington, and toward empowering individuals and local economies. We believe prosperity is driven by free markets, free people, and the freedom and opportunity that allow communities, not political insiders, to thrive. In that view, Alaska’s future should be determined by Alaskans, not orchestrated by national strategists with a much different, and often anti-Alaska agenda.
As for Peltola, she has carefully cultivated her “blue-dog” image. She wants to be seen as a centrist voice willing to break from her party, someone who understands Alaska’s distinct political culture. That branding has helped her politically, reassuring voters who might otherwise hesitate to support the hardliner that she really is.
Carville’s message cuts through that image like a laser.
When a national strategist tells you this race is the Democrats’ best shot at controlling the Senate, you have to take it seriously. He’s talking about a vote that will matter when the stakes are highest, whether on judicial confirmations, institutional changes, or draconian federal policy destroying Alaska’s economy.
Carville’s outreach is following directly in the footsteps of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has already reached out beyond her New York base to rally support for Peltola. Two of the most recognizable and influential voices in the Democratic Party are targeting Alaska voters, which signals something bigger than a routine campaign ask. This race has become a national priority.
Known for his scorched-earth style and his willingness to say the quiet part out loud, Carville has remained influential precisely because he doesn’t sugarcoat.
So when Carville speaks, it’s worth listening, not for the polished performance, but for the candor.
What he’s saying now is simple: Alaska is in play, and Democrats see it as a path to power.
Alaskans have always prided ourselves on our independence. We don’t like being told what role we’re supposed to play in someone else’s board game. And we tend to look skeptically at Outside influence, especially when it arrives with an ActBlue donation link attached.
Carville’s message may have been intended to energize donors. But for many of us, it may have done something else: He just clarified the stakes.
Once you understand how national operatives are framing Peltola as “selfless,” the question becomes harder to ignore:
Is this about Alaska first? Or is it about Washington wielding more power over us?

Carville is always particularly transparent just before he periodically sheds his skin.
