Aug. 26, 2026 – Alaska is approaching a political transformation that conservatives need to recognize before it is too late: The state could emerge from the November election with a Democratic governor and Democratic control of both chambers of the Legislature.
In other words, a Democrat trifecta.
That has not happened in modern Alaska history. The closest comparison comes from the earliest years of statehood, when Democrat William Egan was governor and Democrats overwhelmingly controlled the Legislature. And I mean overwhelmingly: The first state Senate had roughly 18 Democrats and two Republicans, while the first House included 34 Democrats or Democrat-aligned members, five Republicans and one independent.
Alaska may now be drifting back toward the political conditions of those early years. Ranked-choice voting has done its magic for the Democrats, but Republicans are also doing plenty to help.
Start with the governor’s race.
Bernadette Wilson emerged from the primary as the leading Republican candidate. Under a traditional party-primary system, Republicans would have selected their nominee, Democrats would have selected theirs, and the two parties would have met in November with clearly defined candidates. It would have been Bernadette Wilson vs. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins.
That is not how Alaska’s jungle primary works these days under ranked-choice voting. All candidates run together, and the top four advance regardless of party. The general election then becomes another multicandidate contest conducted through ranked-choice voting.
That means Dave Bronson can remain on the ballot even though Republican voters have already placed Wilson ahead of him.
Bronson has now made it clear that he will not withdraw. He dug in his heels and won’t let that uppity woman become governor. That decision is particularly consequential because he had signed a Republican vetting document agreeing to leave the race if he was not the leading Republican after the primary. He has chosen a different course: To break his promise.
His continued candidacy does more than divide the Republican vote. It ensures that the Republican side will remain consumed by an internal war.
Bronson has attacked Wilson publicly and, according to numerous accounts that have been told to me recently, he’s attacking her personally in private conversations. Opposition research from his team has been slipped to political operatives and bloggers, while third-party political organizations aligned with Bronson’s campaign continue working to damage the Republican frontrunner.
The message is becoming unmistakable: If Bronson cannot win the Republican contest, he appears prepared to make it as difficult as possible for Wilson to win the general election.
That is a formula for electing Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins or Tom Begich.
The two leading Democrats collectively demonstrated substantial strength in the primary, and no infighting. They now have the luxury of watching Republicans tear each other apart. Every dollar spent attacking Wilson, every damaging rumor passed to a blogger and every personal grievance carried into November makes it easier for Democrats to capture the Governor’s Office.
Under the former primary system, Bronson’s campaign would effectively be over. Wilson would be the Republican nominee, and Republicans would have several months to consolidate around her.
Under ranked-choice voting, Bronson remains in the driver’s seat. He can continue splitting first-choice Republican votes and encouraging his supporters to withhold their second-choice rankings from Wilson. Even if he has no viable path to becoming governor, he retains the power to prevent another Republican from winning.
This is not an accidental defect in Alaska’s election system. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. It is one of the predictable consequences of eliminating party primaries.
The legislative picture is just as alarming for conservatives in Alaska.
Ten of the Alaska Senate’s 20 seats are on the ballot this year: Districts A, C, E, G, I, K, M, O, Q and S.
Republicans appear likely to retain A, M, O and Q. Democrats or members who can reliably be expected to organize and vote with them are positioned to control C, E, G, I, K and S.
That count includes Sen. Cathy Giessel in the Democratic column for governing purposes. Giessel continues to carry a Republican registration, but her political conduct has moved sharply away from the Republican base. She has repeatedly joined Democrats to form a majority, helped shut conservative Republicans out of meaningful authority, and demonstrated that her strongest political hostility is reserved for members of her own party.
Giessel could even emerge as Senate president again. This is likely.
Party labels become meaningless when a Republican uses her position to organize with Democrats, elevate Democratic priorities and marginalize Republican legislators. Conservatives should measure lawmakers by how they govern, not simply by the letter printed beside their names.
The House outlook may be worse.
A district-by-district analysis currently points toward approximately 23 seats for Democrats or Democrat-aligned candidates and only 17 for Republicans. If Rep. Mia Costello loses House District 15, the Democratic side could grow to 24.
That estimate even assumes Rep. Chuck Kopp remains with Republicans when the House organizes. He’s been siding with the Democrats for years. But if Democrats hold 23 or 24 seats, they will not need Kopp or any other Republican crossover vote. They will be able to select the speaker, control the committees, write the budget and determine which bills receive hearings entirely on their own.
Some prospective Republican victories also feel hollow because experience has shown that not every legislator elected with an “R” beside his or her name will remain loyal to Republican voters when organization time arrives.
But with a sufficiently large Democratic majority, those crossover Republicans may become irrelevant. Democrats will no longer need to construct a nominally bipartisan coalition. They can govern outright — just them and the so-called independents.
Put the three pieces together: Kreiss-Tomkins or Begich as governor, a Democrat-controlled Senate and a House with as many as 23 or 24 Democrat-aligned members.
That is the trifecta.
It would give the political left control over the operating budget, capital spending, taxes, resource policy, education funding, judicial appointments, state boards and commissions, election law and the redistricting process that follows the 2030 census. A Democratic governor would also possess veto authority, appointment power and the ability to shape every major policy fight in Juneau.
For the conservatives who work, build businesses, develop Alaska’s resources and keep the state’s economic wheels turning, this is not an abstract partisan argument. It is a real and present political danger.
Ranked-choice voting was marketed as a less divisive way to conduct elections. Yet the Republican governor’s race illustrates precisely how it can prolong division. Instead of settling the contest in a primary, it carries defeated intraparty candidates into the general election and gives them additional months to attack the party’s frontrunner.
The political parties no longer select their standard-bearers. Candidates rejected by most members of their own political coalition can stay on the ballot, continue raising and spending money, and help elect the opposing party.
The system is working exactly as its architects intended.
Alaska conservatives are now in danger of losing not merely a governing coalition, but their numerical ability to stop the left. The state could return to a political alignment not seen since the opening years of statehood, when Democrats controlled nearly everything.
And if that happens, Republicans will not be able to say they were not warned.
The danger is visible. The numbers are in front of us. The path to a Democratic trifecta is open.
Dave Bronson’s decision to remain in the race makes that path wider. His misogyny has got the best of him at this point.

Wow that would be devastating to the state of Alaska I pray to God this doesnt happen.
As Suzanne illustrates, it’s not ranked choice voting that causes the problem; rather, it’s the lack of unity and a deficit of smart politics by Republican candidates.
Democrats may very well show significant gains in the November election if the Republican candidates can’t get their act together. And if those Dem gains do in fact happen, their opponents will have only themselves to blame, not the ranked choice system.
I agree with some of this article. If we’re talking Ego… all politicians have ’em, some larger than others. We can blame the current RCV which, by the way, I dislike to an extreme but, why don’t the Dems have an issue with it? They set these traps because they know that our side will step right into it. This primary is a perfect example of it. Again. How many posts over the years in here have repeated the same complaints: “I’m not voting because I don’t like mail-in.” “I’m not voting because of RCV.” “I’m not voting because I’ll never vote for a Begich.” The pissing matches are becoming predictable. And, after this one, you’ll read “I’m never voting again because it doesn’t do any good.” If Bronson and/or Wilson lose, they’ll have had a lot of help in doing it. (For the record, I voted for Shelley Hughes and, I’m still gonna vote in the General and, like RCV or not, I’m ranking Bronson and Wilson.
Yay!
Didn’t you mean “gay”? Donald J. Trump is your president!
oh gawd. Did you write that with crayons?
The Democrats have had control of the Legislature for decades through RINO coalitions. Republicans haven’t ever been able to take advantage of numerical majorities ever. The major question here is which “Democrat” gains the governor’s mansion? The Left Wing Democrat, or the communist?
…..or the LGBTQ, homosexual candidate with funny initials……
……..who is also a communist……….
When Bronson reneged on his promise to drop out if he wasn’t first in the primary, he proved he can’t be trusted. And disparaging another Republican behind their back further disqualifies him.
I agree with your assessment Randy.
The GOP keeps putting up loser candidates like wilson and Sullivan then they wonder why conservatives don’t turn out to vote them in. Alaska is a RED state! However, we are done voting for rinos. the only thing that matters this fall is Yes on 2!
We are voting to rid ourselves of rank voting this election. If we don’t follow the current election law then we will put a Democrat in the governors house and we will elect Democrat majorities in the state house and senate. Now, of all times we need to vote to remove rank voting AND at the same time rank candidates who will not result is the Democrats sweeping the elections in a red state. If you do not follow the current election law and refuse to support Republicans you are choosing to elect Democrats.
Wilson also didn’t achieve a majority win. Wilson also signed the drop-out agreement in District 8. Any move out by Bronson ensures a lesser R candidate moves up. And the greater likelihood a Dem wins the governor’s position.
Honestly as Alaskans, maybe we deserve a few years of complete democrat control. We have become complacent and continually vote in limp wristed republicans that have a proven record of cozying up to the minority democrats and wasting away the multitude of opportunities that we have had placed before us. After seeing this place descend into the cesspool it has become, maybe we deserve the pain, let it marinate and soak in. Then pick up the pieces if and only if, people have had enough to not repeat the same mistakes. At this point, I’m not sure if a large enough segment of the populace even give a damn anymore.
I have to agree with just about everything Suzanne Downing says. She speaks no falsehoods. The Republicans will self implode much to my satisfaction. I’d have to say that Downing is probably the best journalist in Alaska, even though it really pains me to admit it. If I hadn’t been such a drunk and mean-spirited old man for the past five decades, I would be sitting in some nice digs and looking hot like Suzanne. But here I am, old, wrinkled, ruined, almost broke and predictably unhappy. If anybody reading this comment could take a little pity on me and donate something, anything, I would be most appreciative. I hate to be that journalist at the corner of the box stores begging for change, but that’s where I’m headed. Liver transplants aren’t cheap.
Forever grateful,
Derm The Mutt.
Trying to Snort and Barely Farting,
From Alaska.
Derm, was that you on the corner with a tin can? Your placard stated, “Medical emergency! Need help for liver and brain transplant. Desperate Democrat.”
Best comment of the day. 🤣🤣
Suzanne, why do you ignore there are also two Democrats on the RCV ballot for this race? If what you say is true for the 2 Republicans why would your logic not apply to the 2 Democrat candidates too? Are their chances less if both of them stay in the race as you claim is the case with Wilson and Bronson? Democrats and left leaning Indies are going to rank both Democrats (and maybe even a weaker primary winner Republican like Treg Taylor or Click Bishop) to prevent their RCV ballots from being exhausted and to stop the stronger Republican like Wilson or Bronson.
Secondly, the two Democrats Begich and JKT did NOT rack up an impressive primary win. Their numbers were only higher because the Republicans split the primary vote into much tinier pieces. So please stop with this means one of them will win the governor race because of that mirage.
Lastly, we Republican and common sense Independents with a brain need to wait to see what happens by the drop out date before deciding a viable RCV voting strategy to electing a Republican governor. AND YES ON 2!
If Tom Begich represents anti-communist Democrats, and if JKT is the Democrat Socialist I think he is, I’m hoping Begich won’t withdraw. We might get lucky.
Suzanne, at this point, you pushing this topic of Bronson like this IS GOING TO ENSURE A THAT A DEMOCRAT WINS the governor race. I didn’t realize how divisive you are until this race. Sad.
Just like with the Peltola win, people refused to vote for two republicans (or however many were in the top four-can’t recall now). Instead, many people only voted for one candidate. That is how we got Peltola.
Republicans, please rank both republican candidates in the governor race. Rank them how you want to, but rank both so that we have a better chance at getting a Republican governor.
Janice and Jen are spot on here. SD is making mountains out of molehills. She is blinded by her cult-like devotion to wilson. Bronson will probably stay on the ballot to ensure nobody else advances and then do the right thing to consolidate the Republican vote. Heck even I will end up voting for the loser candidate wilson and maybe even vote for that two-faced rino sullivan. People need to wake up and demand better candidates! Vote yes on 2!
Suzanne is ringing the bell now to get everyone thinking. This election is not just about Dave Bronson’s busted ego. It’s about saving Alaska from going down the sh*tter by a bunch of Marxists. You people need to start thinking long term. Otherwise, it will be too late come November.
If Democrats do as well as I expect in the November midterm election, the GOP will have only one person to blame: The guy in the Oval Office. They can also blame themselves for being so utterly spineless and terrified of Trump that they would do NOTHING to reign him in. The people I know who voted for him said they just wanted him to secure the border with Mexico and bring down inflation. And to his credit he has secured the border. But everything else has been bluster and self-glorification.
If Democrats don’t do as well as you expect in the November midterm election will you give credit to Trump, since obviously you think the world revolves around him.
Chuck, are you a low information guy or what? Trump has done so much in the past 18 months, it makes all other presidents combined look like idiots. Return of US manufacturing. Corrective tariffs against those who have imposed tariffs against us for decades, including Canada. Secured Venezuela. Stopped massive illegal drug shipments. Stood up to the Chinese and Russians. Got illegal immigration under control. Building up our military forces. Building new Navy ships. ICE is rounding up and getting rid of the 18 million illegals that Biden let into our country. Cleaning up crime all over America. etc..etc.
Wake up, Mr. You sound like a low IQ kind of man.
.
BTW, you don’t need to put your photo in the comment section. You aren’t that hot. 😘
Agree with Tiffany. When an unattractive guy places his photo with his name in caps, he’s trying to impress someone. Just not here. He should try Craigslist. Better yet, a Democrat blog where some old, white hair 60’s hippy women congregate to talk about their physical ailments. Better luck, chuck.
Tiffany: What a vile angry response! And fully misinformed. A supporter of Trump is, by definition, a fucking idiot. You are a supporter of Trump.
Disappointed in u Suzanne. Many Rs and independents didn’t vote in the primary waiting to see who ended up on the stupid ballot. If 60% of the constituents are conservative, we’ll get a win, I know u want Wilson, but don’t be obnoxious.
TundraArab:
Have you donated to Alaska Story? Or are just hanging out trying to sound intelligent?
It’s okay that Tumdrab doesn’t donate just as long as the 25,000 readers supporting the vision of Alaska Story donate at least 25$ a month. For as long as we are blessed to have an employment. We 1/25,000 readers can each afford 25 on the first of the month to be taken out of our accounts. We just would have 25$ less each month to self indulge on something that only benefits self.
Just like the Christian. Ms Downings job is just to scatter the seeds not convince her readers whether or not they come to learn or not or spout their wrong opinions.
Tina, if I work for the government and am dependent on it for my family’s livlehood, is my $25 no good? Should I not give to Downing cuz the money is tainted?
The article gets a fair amount right, and credit where it’s due: it names the Republican failures driving this. Bronson signed a pledge to step aside, then broke it. This is a self-inflicted wound, and SD says so plainly.
The bigger headwind isn’t ranked-choice voting, it’s the Trump administration. Trump and his team of misfits have run this administration with a level of incompetence that now shows up in hard numbers: net approval around -20, worse than any president at this point in a term since Truman, and Democrats up six to eight on the generic ballot.
This stands out in Alaska’s primary too. Mary Peltola led Dan Sullivan 49.1 to 42.1. Even if Sullivan took every one of Decoy Dan’s votes, he’d still trail at 44.6. Primary turnout isn’t November turnout, but a sitting Republican senator running seven points behind in Alaska isn’t something a ranked-choice mechanic explains.
And it isn’t mainly that Republicans are switching sides. Independents have walked, and Democrats are motivated to turn out while Republicans aren’t. That’s how midterms punish an unpopular administration.
Kreiss-Tomkins and Begich were never unelectable. Begich led the Senate minority. JKT spent years in the House. They’re conventional Alaska Democrats running in a year when the national brand is an anchor.
So yes, Republicans did this to themselves, but not just in Alaska, nationwide.
Thanks for your sheepy comment BillNorthman. Another stooge Democrat and lowly informed human. Trump has saved our country from your heros, Obama and Biden, two of the lowlifes who brought this country 20 million illegals and 10 million fake votes. Sounds like you need more education and less marijuana. Have fun at the pumps and don’t forget to eat your veggies. Some of them are contaminated with disease brought in by illegal pickers. Hope your stools hold together by election day.
Bat21: Did you write this during 7th period? Do you still draw rocket ships? Do you laugh at fart jokes?
No, no, and no. I wrote it while I was looking at a photo of myself in a Ranger uniform in NVN, where I was trained as a sniper and inserted into the jungle to pick off ignorant commies. Loved the work and was very good at it too. What do you do?
Uh huh, cool story bro.
So you killed people and enjoyed it. There are many words to describe you.
Bill, after this midterm election, Trump finishes his last two years in office. The boogeyman will be gone. We’ll be back to the normal of pre-2016. You will then be happy, right?
If you’re saying things will return to normal in the Republican party – a platform of small government, individual liberty, rule of law, international leadership, sound fiscal policy, etc – then yeah, I would be. If you’re talking about a return to the Obama era, then no, I would not be. Although if I had my druthers, I’d take the Obama era over this current lunacy.
From Dist. 8 that created the pledge, in part: “The language in our District 8 document states that a candidate agrees to withdraw from a race where they have “garnered less than a majority of votes and where your continued competition with another Republican will split the vote.” No candidate received a majority of the vote in this primary. In fact, no candidate received even a quarter of the statewide republican vote. Under Alaska’s current top-four primary system, voters did not select a Republican nominee. Instead, the four highest vote-getters advance to the general election, regardless of party. As things currently stand, Alaska voters have advanced two Republicans and two Democrats. There are so many candidates on the ballot that dropping out only advances another Republican candidate who had less support than Dave.”
This reporting isn’t up to the good standards we have become accustomed to here. You didn’t accuse NB3 of misogyny when he didn’t drop out after Palin jumped in. Accusing Bronson of it now instead of sticking to the facts would tend to make some feel Wilson is okay with pulling the woman card instead of presenting her own strengths. Unity and ranking the red is the only path forward for Republicans AND vote YES on Prop. 2 in November to get rid of ranked choice.
[…] Suzanne Downing: Alaska is on the verge of a Democrat trifecta, and Republicans are helping make it … […]
LGBTQ with a hardhat. Good for a disco laugh, but how many men who work with their hands for a living will support a gay governor? Pete Buttegeige had some luck in Indiana, but he was a married man. His husband made him honest …….(sorta).
“……….how many men who work with their hands for a living will support a gay governor?……….”
Hell, these days I’m impressed when I even find a man who works………..period.
I don’t think JKT is married. He’s not yet been made an honest man…by a man. But like Mary Peltola, he’s looking for a husband.
Are there really that many Alaskans who will support an LGBTQ guy for governor? Frankly, I’m amazed, especially for a state like Alaska. It astounds me that JKT received that many votes. I never even heard of him until a few weeks ago. This is scary stuff. Will he be hosting drag shows in the governor’s mansion?
Tupper ware and knitting parties?
Brian, Pete Buttigieg was a failed mayor of South Bend, Indiana. The only reason he won was 1) abysmal voter turnout and 2) South Bend is filled with Notre Dame leftists and marxists who do vote. Petey still has dreams of the White House, moving in with the sodomite faux husband along with the two children they purchased (that he pretended to breast feed with that plastic contraption strapped to his chest.🤮)
For future, social media Republican voters just need to quit razzing on JKT singleness for being LGB. It’ll just push voters in sympathy toward supporting JKT even more so because of the education system grooming students become more “tolerating” and more “accepting.”
He’s done nothing in the behavior and words to say he identifies with that identity. There is nothing wrong with a man of 40s to still be single and potentially becoming Alaska’s first Bachelor governor without a First Lady.
He just hadn’t find a woman like Boaz was in his forties before meeting Ruth from the bible’s book of Ruth.
But Boaz instead of playing the field, making himself a w****, and feeling sorry for himself for being single and having no children; he chose to his property field and manage his household and lead his community.
AKRepublicans have bigger issues to worry about than Who is JKT. Let him run his race without accusations and gossip and Republicans try to unite and maintain the Governor’s office God willing if God wills it.
What will make this Race more memorable and historic is IF while JKT could be Alaska’s first bachelor Governor Bernadette could be Alaska’a first elected “Single mother” though by divorce, she’ll still be a single mother.
Alaska has had neither type of Governors.
The idea that Wilson is the true conservative candidate is Bull paddies! If she were to win, it would be due to name recognition due to the advertising $$ spent by a combination of sheeple and special interest entities. And RCV would be a reason as well. So I think Bronson has every right to stay in, in fact more right than Wilson….
Your man Bronson proved to be incapable of doing the job during his term as Mayor.
I’m sure he is a decent fellow but in my humble opinion his resume is weak and unsuitable for executive leadership.
Bronson is a pilot. Pilots take orders from Ground control regarding where to taxi, the Tower gives the pilot instructions as when to take off and land. After rotation the pilot contacts Center for route and altitude. Pilots are wonderful and skilled at landing, but management of people, ( especially hostile ones) isn’t something they learn to do.
I’ll certainly rank Mr. Bronson as my second choice.
In the meantime, let’s not let ego and personal vendetta destroy our State.
P.S. I donated to Bronsons campaign for Mayor and I dont live in Anchorage.
I too, am disappointed in your writing, Suzanne. I knew you were a huge supporter of Bernadette, but didn’t think you would stupe to falsehood reporting to defend her. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Bernadette, just not as givernor at this time. Distruct 8 has explained the wording in their pledge they asked to be signed by the candidates and I figure you probably have a copy of that pledge. If you do not you should have. Either way falsehood. Misogny us not the greatest description for you to come up with for Bronson, either! He is a married man with a family who supports him 100% and many women, like me, who do as well. Not a good look, Suzanne. I know you won’t withdraw some of your comments, but you should with the proper apologies.
