Federalist: Outside millions fuel Alaska campaign opposing ranked-choice repeal

THE ALASKA STORY

Oct. 10, 2026 – Alaska’s campaign to preserve ranked-choice voting is drawing substantial funding from outside organizations while warning voters about dark money, according to an Oct. 9 report by The Federalist’s Shawn Fleetwood.

Fleetwood reported that No on 2 raised approximately $3 million during the July 8–Oct. 2 reporting period. Major contributors included Unite America PAC, which gave $1 million, and the National Education Association, which contributed $700,500. AFSCME supplied another $250,000, while Way Back PAC contributed $275,000.

Unite America’s latest contribution followed nearly $3.61 million it provided during the previous reporting period, according to Fleetwood’s review of Alaska Public Offices Commission disclosures.

The Federalist highlighted the contrast between those outside contributions and No on 2’s campaign messaging criticizing dark money and outside spending. Out-of-state contributions and undisclosed underlying funding are distinct issues; the organizations identified in the report appear as disclosed donors.

Ballot Measure 2 would repeal ranked-choice voting and certain campaign-finance disclosure provisions. Alaska’s previous repeal effort narrowly failed in 2024.
