Deadly fire at Canadian military base sends injured to hospitals across Edmonton

THE ALASKA STORY

Oct. 18, 2026 – A fire at one of Canada’s busiest military training bases killed and injured multiple people Saturday, triggering a major emergency response as strong winds pushed flames beyond the installation’s boundaries in Alberta.

The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed the deaths and injuries in an early Sunday statement but withheld casualty figures while authorities assessed the incident and notified families. Other reporting says at least seven have died. Officials had not publicly confirmed the cause.

The fire began around 4 pm local time Oct. 17 in the training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, roughly 130 miles southeast of Edmonton. Military and civilian emergency crews responded as the blaze spread rapidly.

Sources said a live-fire training exercise struck a natural gas line or gas well, triggering an explosion and fire. Neither that account of the cause nor those casualty figures had been publicly confirmed by Canadian authorities as of early Sunday.

Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed Saturday evening that the incident had caused fatalities and injuries, describing the situation as “very, very active and delicate.”

The Canadian military and Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating. McGuinty said he could not recall a comparable incident in recent memory.

The emergency strained medical facilities around Wainwright, with injured patients transported to Edmonton hospitals. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency physician at Royal Alexandra Hospital, told CBC that local health facilities had become overwhelmed. Hospitals activated a “code orange,” a protocol used to prepare for a mass-casualty emergency.

Strong winds drove the fire across the base’s perimeter fence into the Municipal District of Wainwright. Local officials later reported the fire was being held, with monitoring continuing. No evacuation order was in effect.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged the tragedy and pledged support for the response. Smith described a serious fire affecting military personnel, while Carney said federal officials were working with provincial and local authorities.

CFB Wainwright hosts the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre and regularly supports major Army exercises.

In its Sunday statement, National Defence said its immediate priorities were helping those affected and notifying next of kin.
