Begich unveils ‘DATA Act’ to promote off-grid power, cut energy costs

April 21, 2026 Congressman Nick Begich on Tuesday introduced new legislation aimed at lowering energy costs and reshaping how power-hungry industries operate, particularly in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence.

The proposal, known as the DATA Act of 2026, is the House companion to a Senate bill led by Sen. Tom Cotton. Begich is joined by co-sponsors Congressmen Dan Crenshaw and Burgess Owens.

At the center of the legislation is a push to allow large-scale manufacturers and technology firms to generate their own electricity through so-called “grid-of-one” systems, which are self-contained, off-grid power supplies designed to operate independently from existing public utilities.

Begich said the bill is both an economic and strategic move, tying America’s energy capacity directly to its ability to compete globally in artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.

“America must win the race to lead in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies,” Begich said. “This allows innovation to scale without forcing households to subsidize massive new energy demands or straining local utilities.”

The legislation would update federal regulations to make it easier for companies to build and operate isolated energy systems on-site. Such systems would prevent large data centers from driving up electricity demand on public grids, which can lead to higher costs for residential customers.

For Alaska, the implications could be significant. The state has long struggled with high energy costs and remote infrastructure challenges, but it also holds vast stranded energy resources.

Begich said the DATA Act could open the door to new development by allowing companies to harness those resources directly, without requiring major expansions to existing utility systems.

The bill also aligns with Begich’s broader focus in Congress on energy production and infrastructure. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee, as well as the Transportation & Infrastructure and Science, Space & Technology committees.

  1. This is important. Dr Jesus Trump is a hurricane of US and world destruction. Begich has not said a god damn thing against Trump. Begich is a weakling , a toady, a wispy frail man when we need strong leaders to protect what’s left of democracy.
