Sept. 16, 2026 – A major project designed to turn North Slope natural gas into methanol and ultra-low sulfur diesel has reached another construction milestone at Prudhoe Bay.
Alyeschem LLC announced Tuesday that crews installed the final foundation pile for its chemical and fuels manufacturing facility over the weekend. Completion of the piling provides the structural foundation needed for the plant and moves the project further into its construction phase.
The facility is being built on an existing gravel pad developed by the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority. It will use North Slope natural gas and captured carbon dioxide to manufacture methanol and ultra-low sulfur diesel, with hydrogen used during the refining process.
The project is intended to create value from North Slope gas that might otherwise remain stranded while increasing Alaska’s manufacturing capacity and strengthening the state’s supply of diesel fuel.
Alyeschem broke ground earlier this year after receiving an investment from AIDEA. The project is expected to support approximately 80 construction jobs and 15 permanent operational positions, while generating additional economic activity for the North Slope Borough and the state.
“The completion of foundation piling work demonstrates that construction is moving forward and that another important project milestone has been reached,” AIDEA Executive Director Randy Ruaro said.
Ruaro described Alyeschem as an innovative Alaska project capable of creating jobs, strengthening the state’s energy supply chain and adding value to resources that have historically gone undeveloped.
“We are pleased to see continued progress as the project advances toward construction completion,” he said.
Alyeschem CEO JR Wilcox said the completion of the foundation work reflects the efforts of the company’s construction team, investors and project partners.
“This milestone reflects the hard work and commitment of our project team, investors, and partners as we continue building a first-of-its-kind facility for Alaska’s North Slope,” Wilcox said. “By producing methanol and ultra-low sulfur diesel close to the resources and operations that need them, Alyeschem is helping create new value from Alaska’s natural gas while supporting a stronger, more resilient industrial supply chain.”
The plant’s location near the oil fields could reduce the need to transport some fuels and industrial chemicals from outside Alaska. North Slope operators depend heavily upon diesel and methanol, making local production potentially important for both costs and supply reliability.
Alyeschem is an Alaska-based company developing chemical manufacturing operations that use North Slope natural gas. AIDEA is a state public corporation that provides financing and investment for projects intended to create jobs, diversify Alaska’s economy and produce long-term economic benefits.
