Alaska Air posts first-quarter loss as fuel costs surge, suspends full-year outlook

By THE ALASKA STORY

April 26, 2026 – Alaska Air Group reported a significant first-quarter loss for 2026, as rising fuel costs and operational disruptions weighed on the airline’s bottom line, even as revenue and travel demand remained strong.

The Seattle-based airlines reported a net loss of about $193 million for the quarter, or roughly $1.68 per share, a deeper loss than the same period a year ago.

Despite the loss, revenue climbed to approximately $3.3 billion, about a 5% increase year-over-year, driven by passenger demand and gains in premium and corporate travel.

Corporate travel demand rose 19%, and premium travel continued to outperform as the airline invested in fleet upgrades and onboard technology.

But those gains were overshadowed by rapidly rising costs, especially fuel prices, which have surged. The quarterly report said higher fuel expenses are expected to continue impacting results in the coming months.

Industry-wide, airlines are struggling to keep up with the pace of rising fuel prices, which are outstripping the ability to raise fares, without suppressing customer demand. Although Alaskans use Alaska Airlines for much, if not most, of their interstate travel, just 11% of Alaska Airlines’ passenger capacity is in the Alaska region.

Alaska Air’s adjusted loss of $1.68 per share came in slightly worse than expectations and more than double the loss reported a year earlier.

In reaction, Alaska Air suspended its full-year 2026 financial guidance, citing volatility in fuel markets and broader economic uncertainty, as fuel costs could rise even further in the second quarter, which would add hundreds of millions of dollars in additional expenses and making it difficult to forecast earnings with confidence.

  1. It’ll be little smaller of a tourism season success to which this is where a reconstructed and smaller government for a full PFD at the end of the year would really be helpful softening the hardship working private sector Alaskans will be feeling heading into winter
Americans and foreigners aren’t traveling as much as they had wanting to stay closer to home that’s what forecasts are hinting that Alaska has seen better Tourism business than 2026

  2. This doesn’t make any sense. We got rid of Biden and all of his restrictions. Got the “drill, baby, drill” guy in there. What could have possible upended this trajectory?

  3. Usually, global economics are the result of many complicated policies, events and conditions. Not this time. It’s all because of one extraordinarily corrupt and unintelligent madman. If you voted for him, you are responsible.

    1. I’m pretty sure neither you or Hans are part of the council that voted the for the previous ayatollah, and since the Iranian president is a figurehead for the ayatollah if either of you voted for him that wouldn’t be a big surprise but would have had little impact on the current state of affairs regarding the Straight of Hormuz.

  4. I didn’t really think that the President had quite as much control over gas prices as Trump was claiming during the last election cycle. He sure found an unpleasant way to prove me wrong. He managed to use 5+ years of missile production to murder a bunch of schoolgirls AND drive gas prices halfway to the moon.

Plus, now he has completely ended Iran’s nuclear program at least twice now, not sure why that still seems to be the #1 sticking point in negotiations? Especially after he scrapped Obama’s deal that US intelligence says had been successfully capping Iranian enrichment WAY below the concentration they managed since Trump bailed on the agreement.

    America first, right?
