President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a set of new trade agreements with El Salvador, Argentina, Ecuador, and Guatemala, marking one of the administration’s largest multi-nation trade initiatives in the Western Hemisphere.
The agreements are designed to expand market access for US exports, strengthen supply chains, and deepen economic and security partnerships with several of America’s closest regional allies. Administration officials called it a major step toward creating more balanced and reciprocal trade conditions that benefit American producers across agriculture, manufacturing, and digital commerce.
According to the White House, the commitments secured from the four countries will streamline regulatory barriers, open new sectors to American goods, and reinforce labor, environmental, and intellectual-property standards. The agreements are set to be finalized for signature in the coming weeks.
El Salvador Agreement
El Salvador agreed to reduce a number of non-tariff barriers that have complicated US exports. The country will begin accepting US-standard automotive safety and emissions certifications, as well as FDA certificates and prior marketing authorizations for medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
The deal also ensures that American agricultural exporters will not face restrictions based solely on the use of certain cheese or meat terms, a recurring friction point in international trade.
Argentina Agreement
Argentina committed to expanding preferential market access for US products, including medicines, chemicals, machinery, information technology equipment, medical devices, motor vehicles, and a broad array of agricultural goods.
The country also pledged to address issues highlighted in the US Trade Representative’s 2025 Special 301 report, including patent application backlogs, patentability criteria, and the handling of geographical indications, with the aim of aligning its intellectual-property regime with international standards.
Guatemala Agreement
Guatemala agreed to a framework that supports digital trade by refraining from imposing digital services taxes or other discriminatory measures affecting US digital products. The commitment includes ensuring the free flow of data across trusted borders and supporting the World Trade Organization’s moratorium on customs duties for electronic transmissions.
Guatemala also committed to protect internationally recognized labor rights, including prohibiting imports made with forced or compulsory labor and strengthening its labor enforcement laws.
Ecuador Agreement
Ecuador pledged to maintain high environmental protections, improve forest governance, combat illegal logging, and fully implement the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement.
The country will reduce or eliminate tariff barriers on a range of US goods – including tree nuts, fresh fruit, pulses, wheat, wine, and distilled spirits – and will abolish a variable tariff applied to many agricultural products under the Andean Price Band System. These provisions will create significant new export opportunities for American producers.
Broader Trade Strategy
The administration said the combined agreements reinforce US trade ties with key regional partners while advancing national security interests and supply-chain resilience in the Western Hemisphere. The United States will extend Most Favored Nation tariff treatment to certain goods originating in partner countries that cannot be grown or produced domestically in sufficient quantities.
For El Salvador and Guatemala, the US will eliminate reciprocal tariffs on certain textiles and apparel traded under the Dominican Republic–Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA), a move officials say will benefit US textile production and support economic growth in Central America.
The announcement comes as part of President Trump’s broader effort to address longstanding global trade imbalances. In April, the president declared a national emergency tied to the US goods trade deficit, citing non-reciprocal trade practices and foreign economic policies that suppress domestic wages and consumption.
The administration comes on the heels of similar agreements in Asia, including new reciprocal trade deals with Malaysia and Cambodia, investment commitments from Japan and South Korea, and upcoming negotiations with Thailand and Vietnam.
White House officials said the latest Western Hemisphere agreements show that the United States can both defend domestic industries and secure wider market access abroad, strengthening the economic position of American workers, farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers.

Time will expose whether these efforts actually benefit the USA: I am hopeful. The Administration needs to ink as many of these agreements as possible before SCOTUS (potentially) decides his emergency declaration was inappropriate. All part of “The Art of the Deal.”
