Oct. 15, 2026 — Bill Hill repeatedly emphasized his independence during Wednesday night’s “Debate for the State,” but left unanswered a consequential question for Alaska voters: Which party would he caucus with if elected to Congress?
Facing Republican Congressman Nick Begich, Bill Hill declined to commit to either side, even as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee works to elect him and has been pushing out social media messages on his behalf. He has a record of donating to Socialists AOC, Bernie Sanders, and to Kamala Harris.
The exchange exposed a central tension in Hill’s campaign. He is running as an independent while benefiting from a national Democratic effort to take control of the House.
The DCCC formally added Hill to its “Red to Blue” program on Sept. 15. The program provides organizational and fundraising support to candidates the committee considers strong prospects for flipping Republican seats. Its announcement explicitly described Hill as a candidate who would flip Alaska’s congressional seat.
Yet Hill again stopped short of telling voters which party he would join in organizing the chamber. He just would not come clean with the moderators.
Caucusing helps determine committee assignments and participation in a party’s legislative organization. For Alaska, with just one House member, the question concerns how its representative would exercise influence in Washington.
Hill’s reluctance predates Wednesday’s debate. In June, he would not say whether he would caucus with Democrats or Republicans, instead describing the policy priorities of people he wanted to work with.
During the debate’s exchange about socialism, Hill returned to his independent identification rather than directly rejecting the socialist label. He would not deny being a socialist.
On energy, Hill emphasized the need for renewable power, inviting further scrutiny of how he would balance that goal with Alaska’s oil-dependent economy. In past comments he has said Alaska needs to get off of oil, or “off the sauce,” as he put it.
Hill also faced questions about his decade leading the Bristol Bay Borough School District.
He characterized criticism of student proficiency results as cherry-picking and pointed instead to graduation rates.
But graduation and proficiency measure different outcomes; graduation rate counts students who receive diplomas regardless of their abilities; proficiency assessments measure whether tested students meet academic standards.
The Alaska Story previously reported that, in the 2022–23 school year, three of 24 tested students at Bristol Bay Middle/High School were proficient in English language arts, and two of 24 were proficient in math. Hill left the superintendent’s position at the end of that school year.
Bill Hill ran Bristol Bay schools right into the ground; Naknek proficiency dropped to 5%
For a candidate campaigning on his experience as an educator, he foundered when it came to why the math isn’t mathing.
Begich, meanwhile, had a legislative record to place before voters.
The Center for Effective Lawmaking, a joint initiative of the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University, documented that by late August, 13 Begich-sponsored bills had passed the House and six had become law. The six enactments tied the freshman record in the center’s data covering at least the previous 50 years.
Then he passed a 14th House-passed bill in September, the Archie Cavanaugh Migratory Bird Treaty Clarification Act. He has set the all-time record in American history for a freshman congressman.

Hillbillie Bill couldn’t teach his own students to read or write. What makes voters think that the Hillbillie can read or write? I guess he can catch a few fish and ride a four wheeler. But so can my 8-year old granddaughter. Hillbillie is pathetic and enjoying 15 minutes of fame before NB3:sends him back to the far outskirts of Alaska, never to be seen or heard from again.
Hill can’t speak either. He sounds and looks like an uneducated bafoon. What a joke of a candidate. Begich will clean his clock.
Fantastic! We should no longer focus on achievement. All we need to do is issue diplomas and everything will be fine. Crazy.
That’s an easy question to answer.
.
Hill is a democrat and will caucus with democrats and do what democrats tell him to do.
Because Hill is a democrat.
