A Wasilla-based cardiologist who had briefly served on the Alaska State Medical Board earlier this year has been arrested on felony charges related to child sexual abuse material.
Dr. Ryan McDonough was arrested on Dec. 11 and charged with 10 counts of possessing child sexual abuse material, according to Alaska State Troopers. He was arraigned Friday and released on $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 31 at the Palmer District Courthouse.
The investigation began after tips were submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding uploads to a Dropbox account allegedly linked to McDonough. The case was referred to Alaska law enforcement.
McDonough was appointed to the Alaska State Medical Board by Gov. Mike Dunleavy in August. He attended board meetings in August and September but later stopped attending meetings, and his name was removed from the board roster in November.
According to U.S. News & World Report, McDonough is a cardiologist affiliated with Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. McDonough graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2001. He received his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine–Seton Hill. His specialties include cardiovascular disease, treating conditions such as heart rhythm disorders, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and congenital heart defects.
He completed residency training at Madigan Army Medical Center and served a 14-year career in the U.S. Army, with professional affiliations that included William Beaumont Army Medical Center.
In Alaska, McDonough joined the Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute in 2019, later associated with Mat-Su Heart, and practiced in the Mat-Su Valley, including Wasilla and Palmer, with hospital affiliations that included Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and Providence Alaska Medical Center.
Prior to his arrest, McDonough had generally favorable patient reviews on medical rating platforms, with patients describing him as thorough and knowledgeable.
McDonough is represented by attorney Michael John Branson. The charges are criminal allegations, and McDonough is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

This is a serious problem;
Jonathan R. McDonagh, MD, FACC, FSCAI Is a cardiologist in Anchorage. He is not the subject of this case.
Dr. Ryan McDonough Is the one arrested.
I hope my doctor J.R McDonagh is not confused with the accused cardiologist. The names are spelled slightly differently.
Is there a way to publish a statement to limit confusion?
This is a small medical community, let’s make sure JR is not damaged.
Looks like the good doctor took his own life this morning by burning down his house with himself inside. It’s a shame they couldn’t just hold him until the preliminary hearing; now we may never get answers as to how many victims there were.
“Kiddie porn” is an absolutely disgusting way to word that.
