Democratic socialist Muslim Zohran Mamdani will be the next mayor of New York City after defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa on Tuesday. The result was widely expected, with polls showing Mamdani leading throughout the campaign.
Mamdani, an outspoken radical who has called for higher taxes on wealthy residents, fare-free public transit, and government-run grocery stores, secured about 50.3% of the vote with 89% of precincts reporting. Cuomo, running as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary earlier this year, trailed with 41.6%, while Sliwa drew 7.1%.
Mamdani’s victory marks a sharp ideological turn for New York City politics. He has long aligned himself with the Democratic Socialists of America and gained national attention for his support of pro-Palestinian causes and his past statements critical of the NYPD, including calls to defund the department.
Although he later moderated his tone, several prominent Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, declined to endorse him. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries did endorse Mamdani but publicly distanced himself from suggestions that Mamdani represents the Democratic Party’s future.
Elsewhere, Democrats also won gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, further cementing a strong showing for the party in Tuesday’s elections.
In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill secured victory over Republican Jack Ciattarelli, 56.2% to 43.3%. Sherrill, a U.S. representative since 2019, will succeed Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, while Ciattarelli suffered his second consecutive statewide loss after falling short in 2021.
In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earl-Sears, leading 56.9% to 42.9% with 91% of the vote counted. Spanberger, a former congresswoman, will replace Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who was ineligible to seek another term under Virginia’s single-term limit. Earl-Sears, Youngkin’s lieutenant governor, was unable to extend Republican control of the statehouse.
The race for Virginia attorney general drew national attention after controversial text messages surfaced from Democratic candidate Jay Jones referencing violence Jones wished upon former House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Despite the uproar, Jones maintained a lead over incumbent Republican Jason Miyares, with 91% of the vote counted showing Jones ahead 52.4% to 47.2%.
Overall, the results reflected trends that analysts had predicted: Democrats held their ground in key states, while New York City took a hard left turn under Mamdani’s leadership, signaling an even deeper ideological divide within the Democratic Party itself.

Early polling suggests young women went for Mamdani, Spanberger, Jones and Sherrill around 80%. If true, this is a problem. But we already know we have that problem. Cheers –
It is distinctly possible that New York’s new Ayatollah will try to pay for his schemes by imposing fees or otherwise extracting tribute from the US financial industry which remains centered in NYC. If the Alaska Permanent Fund had some backbone and foresight it would develop a clear plan to limit the extent to which Alaskans are indirectly forced to pay for the new socialist regime thousands of miles away. The Permanent Fund Trustees have a fiduciary obligation to act in the best interests of Alaskans. Supporting Mr. Mamdami is not any part of that and allowing others to exploit Alaska’s wealth would be a violation of the Trustee’s legal and moral obligations to Alaskans.
I need to find some available acreage in fly-over country and start planning my retirement.
Democrats will soon start to try (TRY) to make a distinction between what a Democrat and. Democratic Socialist is…there isn’t much, if anything distinction. AOC is correct, Mamdani is the future of the Democrat Party. The sooner people understand this the sooner the Democrats, whether regular or socialist (but I repeat myself), will be relegated to the extermist minority positions that they hold.
Commie Mandami
Smart republicans would do well to heed the sentiments of the voters. Blue and red Americans are fed up with the Trump miasma. Trump is cognitively failing, corrupt beyond description and his insane policies hurt all of us. What’s to like?
