Man’s life ends on New Year’s Day after he charges Troopers with knife

By THE ALASKA STORY

A Fairbanks man was shot and killed by Alaska State Troopers on New Year’s Day after authorities say he charged at officers with a knife during a domestic disturbance involving what were described as “mental health” concerns.

According to the Department of Public Safety, troopers were notified at approximately 11:30 am. on Jan. 1, that 24-year-old William Rexford of Fairbanks was actively destroying property at a family residence. Troopers responded to the home and made contact with Rexford and other family members inside. Note: There are multiple people named William Rexford in Alaska.

While troopers and family members were speaking with Rexford, troopers determined he was experiencing mental health issues and making suicidal statements. As they discussed options with him, Rexford suddenly ran into the kitchen, armed himself with a knife, and charged toward a trooper while brandishing the weapon.

Multiple troopers fired their weapons, striking Rexford. A second adult male inside the residence was also struck by gunfire. Troopers immediately rendered first aid to both individuals until emergency medical personnel arrived.

Rexford was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured adult male was transported to a Fairbanks-area hospital with serious injuries. Rexford’s body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, and his next of kin have been notified.

The troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on seven days of administrative leave, in accordance with Department of Public Safety policy. Their names are expected to be released within 72 hours.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded and initiated an investigation into the shooting. Once completed, the case will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.

  1. Sounds like he wanted the Troopers to leave and they wouldn’t leave
Being mentally ill he wouldn’t know how to think rational
Reading in between the lines and not knowing what was happening first but his response sounds like someone pushed beyond his patience when someone will not leave or shutting up.

  2. This is not an easy time for boys to grow up…
Boys first have to endure aggressive women. Passive men, and schools genderconfused

  3. People have to remember 10 years ago he was 14 years old.
His untimely should be a reminder (not if condemnation) for All AKparents to check-in with how their kids are doing (and yes gently I try saying even for parents to self evaluate themselves to study if their parenting style, school, is stressing out their sons and daughters) so the parent can make a change in their child’s life
Because just like cavities. Mental health problems don’t spring up overnight. Usually. It’s normally a gradual decline or decay of their child’s spirit until their spirit is crushed and they don’t care anymore 😢. and there is no prosthetic to a crushed Spirit that can fix him except by Jesus Christ.
