The US House of Representatives on Friday passed H. Con. Res. 58, a measure formally condemning socialism in all its forms and outlining the historical record of mass suffering under socialist regimes.
The final vote was 285–98, with 98 Democrats voting against denouncing socialism and two voting “present.” Only 86 Democrats supported the resolution, while 199 Republicans voted in favor, with none opposing it.
“When given the opportunity to denounce socialism on the House floor, Democrat Maxine Waters demanded a recorded vote,” said Alaska Congressman Nick Begich, who supported the measure. “She wanted to put her own party on the record and show the nation what many of us already suspected: Democrats have embraced socialism.”
Begich noted that more Democrats voted to effectively support or avoid condemning socialism (98 no votes and two present votes) than voted to denounce it.
The resolution cites more than 100 million deaths attributed to socialist governments in the 20th century, referencing atrocities such as forced starvation, mass imprisonment, political violence, and economic collapse under regimes in China, the Soviet Union, Cuba, Cambodia, and Venezuela.
Rep. María Elvira Salazar of Florida, the sponsor of the measure, said the resolution serves as a warning about the dangers of expanding government power and adopting economic systems that have historically resulted in repression and mass deaths. She criticized Democrat Maxine Waters, who requested the recorded vote and publicly opposed the resolution.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said the vote signals that the House majority rejects socialism’s expansion of state power at the expense of individual liberty and economic freedom.
Salazar stressed that the resolution’s language reflects the historical record of socialist regimes and said the vote demonstrates how sharply the parties diverge on the issue. “The House just passed my resolution condemning socialism, 285–98,” she said after the vote. “Ninety-eight Democrats refused to condemn Mao, Stalin, Castro, and Maduro. Warning to America: More Democrats in the House of Representatives support socialism than oppose it.”
Friday’s vote places House Democrats on the record at a time when several of their members openly identify with or are endorsed by socialist groups. The resolution also comes as New York City Democratic Socialist Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani prepares to travel to the White House for meetings with the Trump administration.
Republicans, including Begich, said the vote sends a clear message that Republicans will not embrace Marxism or the expansion of government control associated with it.

You will note that if the resolution contained the language, “socialism in ALL its forms”, we would be forced to confront that we have adapted socialism ALL THE TIME in the last 100 years, start with the Alaska railroad, the Matanuska Valley farming project, the New Deal, the Great Society, Obamacare, Medicare, ad nauseum, ad infinitum. The problems we faced during the Schumer Shutdown became a crisis because of AMERICAN Red-White & Blue socialist programs.
The resolution is a good start … at self-confession. Ron Paul would agree with me.
I agree with you as well. Of course, I’m nobody….
🤜🤛
For those US Democrat congressmen and Women They should the REQUIRED to share their wealth with their constituents back home then. Giving dividends to every low income and middle class in their their districts
Well, that makes sense. Socialist would be unlikely to condemn socialism.
Former KGB detector Yuri Bezmanov was right, even if his time line was off a little…https://bigthink.com/the-present/yuri-bezmenov/
It’s sad that there are so many uninformed elected Representatives.
Most people don’t even know what socialism is.
I agree and the reason is they are too busy enjoying it until it self implodes.
Unsaid is the condemnation of National Socialism ( the German kind!!)as a form of socialism like the rest.
“We condemn Socialism”
-The Party Backing a Redistribution of Tax Dollars to the Majority of People Not Paying Taxes
Oh wait, that’s just the Republicans attempting to buy votes
The push for socialism has the potential for starting a civil war. Of course the marxist would love causing a divided nation. All part of the communist plan. Among many other causes they are using for division. The enemy is here!
