Getting around Juneau has already become a challenge, with streets narrowed into what residents describe as a corn maze of snow, towering berms squeezing traffic, and growing concern about heavy snow loads on roofs. Now, another significant winter storm is prompting widespread closures across the capital city.
Municipal and state government offices, along with Juneau’s public schools, will be closed Monday, Jan. 5, as forecasters warn of an additional five to 13 inches of snow falling on a community still struggling to recover from last week’s record accumulations.
The City and Borough of Juneau announced Sunday that all CBJ facilities will be closed to the public, and the Juneau School District confirmed that schools will also be closed for the day.
According to the National Weather Service, very heavy snowfall is expected to begin around midday Monday, with rates of up to one inch per hour continuing through the afternoon. The storm is forecast to bring very limited visibility and hazardous road conditions during peak commuting hours.
City officials cited the high-confidence forecast and worsening road hazards as the reason for the closure. While facilities will be closed to in-person services, CBJ staff will continue providing services remotely wherever possible.
Residents are being urged to stay off the roads for their own safety and to allow snow removal crews to operate as safely and efficiently as possible while crews continue to dig out from last week’s storms.
The closures affect all facilities operated by the City and Borough of Juneau, including all Juneau Public Libraries locations and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. All Juneau Parks and Recreation facilities will also be closed, including the Dimond Park Field House, Dimond Park Aquatic Center, Augustus G. Brown Pool, Treadwell Arena, the Zach Gordon Youth Center, and other recreation sites. The Shéiyi X̱aat Hit Youth Shelter will remain open.
Capital Transit will continue operating on winter routes, with riders encouraged to check for updates.
The Juneau School District has directed families to its website for additional details regarding the school closure as Juneau braces for yet another round of heavy snow.

Lucky kids!
A day off from the being brainwashed
Oh JHCOAB! Is there any thing you are FOR? You can be such an inarticulate downer.
Soon(!), the brainwashing may come to an end. We’ll have better options, the most promising are these “Optimus” robots that can//will allow us to Home School our children without the brainwashing from the NEA and ASD. And(!!!), we’ll possibly be able to write-off the expense – operations costs, reducing our property taxes (hopefully by a significant amount), while offering our kids a World Class education not achievable with the current system.
