Sept. 25, 2026 – For Chugiak and Eagle River residents who have followed Eaglexit’s yearslong effort to separate from Anchorage, a state regulation could shape the next steps. The Alaska Local Boundary Commission will meet Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 2 pm to continue discussing amendments to 3 AAC 110.270(e), a rule governing proposals to leave one borough and form another. The meeting will be held by Zoom.
Eaglexit wants the Chugiak–Eagle River area to leave the Municipality of Anchorage and form a home rule Chugach Regional Borough, with its own local government and school district. The group submitted a petition package last November for the state’s informal technical review after years of organizing.
The regulation at issue requires a proposed new borough to include substantially more land and population than the area being detached from the existing borough. Eaglexit supporters have sought its repeal, arguing that it creates an obstacle to their proposal. The commission discussed that request at meetings earlier this year; its Sept. 30 meeting is described as a discussion of amendments. The notice does not announce a pending decision on Eaglexit’s petition.
