Cutting class: Bryantt leaving Anchorage School District for superintendent job in Virginia

By SUZANNE DOWNING

Anchorage School District Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt announced Thursday that he is leaving Alaska to lead Alexandria City Public Schools in Virginia, setting up a leadership transition midway through the school year.

Bryantt, who has led ASD since July 2022, informed district families in an emailed letter on Oct. 8. He said the Alexandria City School Board voted that day to appoint him as its next superintendent and that he accepted the position.

He expects to conclude his Anchorage service in early 2027. Reporting on his appointment puts his Alexandria start date at Feb. 1, 2027.

“Anchorage has been my home for more than four years, and serving this district and community has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” Bryantt wrote.

He described the decision as difficult and said he would remain engaged in district operations until his departure.

“Today is not goodbye,” he wrote.

The announcement comes as ASD develops its next budget and considers the future of the district amid financial and operational challenges. Bryantt said he would continue supporting schools through the academic year and work with the Anchorage School Board and district leadership on the transition.

“We still have important work ahead of us,” Bryantt wrote. “We are developing next year’s budget, supporting our schools through this academic year, and listening to our community about the future of the district.”

Anchorage School Board President Carl Jacobs acknowledged that the timing of Bryantt’s departure could create concerns for families and employees.

Jacobs said the board recognizes that a leadership change during the school year can cause uncertainty and disruption. He said its immediate focus would be stability and support for students, staff, and families.

Jacobs also said the board would listen to the community and carefully consider what Anchorage needs from its next superintendent, promising a thoughtful and transparent process.

Bryantt’s letter did not identify a successor or provide a timetable for selecting one.

The Anchorage School Board named Bryantt superintendent on April 14, 2022, to replace Deena Bishop. He took the job on July 1, 2022, after serving as an executive officer in Houston Independent School District. His departure announcement says he will finish in Anchorage in early 2027, a little more than four years after that start date.

  1. Because ASD is going broke. Just like a pastor leaving a dwindling congregation, Bryant is following the money. He’s leaving to save himself before he is blamed for ASD’s failures.
Warning to all your republicans who are in position to leave the state if JKT is governor, not all states that look Red are solidly red. Virginia Is going blue because they are facing the same issues with Leftists and Islamists we NYC or Dearborn or Dallas

  2. This little geek is smarter than I thought. He’s getting the hell out of Anchorage before his reputation is totally destroyed. Who’s the next laughable Leftist to be recruited? It will be entertaining to watch.

    1. No. The reason he’s leaving is because he ran out of homosexual men to date. Even a big town like Anchorage has limitations. The homo dating pool gets recycled pretty fast. On to the next crop …..

  3. No, you are wrong JB. This is goodbye and good riddance. Can’t you leave any faster? Apparently, Virginia needs a DEI, unqualified, incompetent idiot with poor judgment, poor decision making, lack of due diligence and lack of ordinary business care and prudence skills who only knows how to waste money, manipulate and yell give me more money. Perhaps they need you to lower their students’ reading, writing, math proficiency skills to the bottom of the list.

  4. They must be in desperate need of a way to spend insane amounts of money to deliver substandard educational results. can’t he take the entire school.board with. It?
