After Graham Platner backs Mary Peltola, new allegations raise questions

By SUZANNE DOWNING

July 6, 2026 – Just days after Maine Democratic US Senate candidate Graham Platner publicly urged supporters to help elect Mary Peltola to the US Senate, Platner is facing another serious controversy.

A woman who previously dated Platner has now alleged that he forced her to have sex despite her repeated objections nearly five years ago. Platner has denied the allegation.

The allegation adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding Platner’s campaign that have already drawn national attention, including reporting about offensive social media posts, allegations from multiple women regarding abusive or threatening behavior, questions surrounding a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and other inflammatory public statements that have resurfaced during his Senate campaign.

The question now is whether Peltola intends to distance herself from Platner after he publicly endorsed her campaign.

Platner recently grouped Peltola alongside other Democratic Senate candidates he said will flip control of the US Senate, writing that he expects victories for James Talarico in Texas, Sherrod Brown in Ohio, Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, and Mary Peltola in Alaska.

So far, Peltola has not publicly responded to Platner’s endorsement, disavowed it, or commented on the latest allegations against him.

If she remains silent, Republicans are likely to ask why.

Among the issues now attached to Platner’s candidacy are:

  • A newly reported allegation of sexual assault, which Platner denies.
  • Earlier accusations from multiple women involving abusive, harassing, or threatening behavior, many of which he disputes.
  • Offensive Reddit posts in which he made inflammatory remarks about sexual assault victims, rural white Americans, police officers, and others.
  • Questions surrounding a tattoo resembling the Nazi Totenkopf symbol, which Platner has said was not intended as a Nazi symbol.
  • Reports highlighting his use of the messaging app Kik, which has received criticism over its moderation history, though use of the app itself is not evidence of wrongdoing.

Whether Peltola chooses to address the endorsement may become its own political issue. Candidates routinely distance themselves from controversial endorsers when they believe the association has become a liability. As of now, Peltola has not done so publicly.

  1. The left have all their little trigger words to illicit mindless emotion and support. “Billionaire” is one. How funny when it is billionaires funding the leftist communist agenda. Democrats are not for working people. Nor for freedom, free enterprise or enjoying the fruits of one’s labor. They are led elitists who want the ‘working people’ to be the peon worker bees laboring for a fixed income while the leftist elitists reap the wealth.

As for Mary, she is an only a pawn. She will do nothing for our state but only add a vote, when she bothers to show up, to the leftist count. Same song and dance as before.

  2. Swapping out Graham Platner is obviously the right move. It should probably be Troy Jackson. He’s from the same wing of the party. He got the Sanders endorsement. He’s a favorite of local unions. Also, gentle reminder that the sitting US president has been accused at least 28 times of sexual harassment and/or assault, and is an adjudicated rapist. Let’s get back to the soccer now.
