Cali cash carries Mary Peltola’s campaign for Senate

By THE ALASKA STORY

April 20, 2026 – A new analysis from the Los Angeles Times puts a spotlight on the growing role of out-of-state money in Alaska’s US Senate race, particularly in support of Democrat Mary Peltola as she challenges incumbent Republican Dan Sullivan.

According to the report, California donors are playing an outsized role in financing Peltola’s campaign. Donors from California who gave $200 or more contributed nearly $900,000 to her campaign, compared to just over $520,000 from Alaska donors in that same itemized category.

Because federal campaign finance law only requires disclosure of donors giving more than $200, the comparison reflects a portion of total fundraising, yet offers a window into where larger contributions are originating.

Peltola’s campaign is being fueled heavily by Outside money, with more by Lower 48 support than Alaska support.

Her campaign reported raising roughly $8.7 to $8.9 million in the first quarter of 2026, which is a record-setting haul for any Senate candidate in Alaska history. Her campaign says 95% of those contributions came from small-dollar donors giving less than $100, donations that are not itemized by geographic location in public filings.

Still, the scale and origin of larger-dollar contributions have drawn attention, particularly as the campaign’s early advertising strategy focused heavily outside the state.

In the opening months of her Senate bid, Peltola’s campaign directed significant digital ad spending toward audiences in the Lower 48, a move widely interpreted as an effort to build a national donor base early in the race.

By comparison, Sullivan raised about $2.1 million during the same quarter. Despite being significantly outraised overall, he maintained a cash-on-hand advantage, with roughly $5.6 to $5.7 million in reserves. This is because Peltola’s campaign spent aggressively on fundraising efforts; she’s spending money to get money.

The Los Angeles Times analysis says California donors, representing one of the nation’s largest and wealthiest pools of Democratic contributors, have become a dominant source of out-of-state funding in multiple competitive Senate races across the country. In several contests, not just Alaska’s, California-based contributions have exceeded in-state donations among itemized donors.

Alaska’s race is expected to be one of the most closely watched in 2026, with national parties and outside groups on both sides investing heavily.

  1. Was the recently caught Iranian weapons and ammo sales rep from Los Angeles one of her major contributors?
They both have the same goals as a traitor to the US.

  2. Peltola is just building her retirement fund. Alaskans remember that she didn’t do anything while she was in office last time.

      1. Respectfully disagree. She can’t retire in Cali. She used to have 170+ of Buzzi’s stolen guns. How many of those make their way south with her is unknown. Cheers –

  3. It doesn’t matter how much these 2 parties spend on their respective candidates. What will motivate the voters in November is their drive to the supermarket and the subsequent checkout shock plus the drive past the gas stations with their neon signs illuminating the stupid decision to go to war! Food and diesel prices will drive the narrative.

    1. You are spot on with the shell shock at the supermarket.
The price of meat eggs and most staple family items nearly doubled when Joe’s handlers sank his ship. Most of those increases never went away when autopen retired.

      1. Andy, you’re boy said “on day one I will….” Any rebuttal? Gasoline, groceries. Just like the result in Virginia tonight – you are going down with this carnival barker. What you Maga’s don’t understand even now, he doesn’t care about your problems. He has never pumped gas into a vehicle in his life. And you thought that the “Apprentice” was based on a true life story. And about “they are eating the cats…” Pathetic.
