Murkowski declares the SAVE America Act bad for Natives, dead in Senate

March 17, 2026 – US Sen. Lisa Murkowski is drawing a line against President Donald Trump’s top legislative priority, saying again on Tuesday that she will not support advancing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in the Senate.

According to reporting by Mediaite, Murkowski, long viewed as a key swing vote in a closely divided chamber, told reporters she would oppose moving the bill forward, dealing a potential setback to Trump’s legislative push. Congressman Nick Begich is a cosponsor of the bill.

SAVE America Act, an election integrity bill, passes US House

“I’m not prepared to go down this uncertain and ill defined path that we’re looking at,” Murkowski reportedly said of the SAVE Act debate in the Senate, according to Huffington Post.

The SAVE Act would require Americans to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, when registering to vote. It would also significantly curtail the use of mail-in voting, restricting it largely to military members and select hardship cases, in federal elections.

Trump has made clear the legislation is a top priority, applying pressure on Congress to act. In a recent social media post, he declared that passage of the bill should take precedence over all other legislative business and warned he would refuse to sign unrelated bills unless lawmakers deliver it to his desk.

“It must be done immediately,” Trump said, calling for strict voter ID requirements and an end to most mail-in ballots.

While voter ID laws and proof-of-citizenship requirements are broadly popular among GOP voters, Democrats believe it creates barriers for voters. Murkowski believes Alaska Natives would be disadvantaged because in her mind they are unable to get proper identification.

Her stance also reflects a familiar pattern: Murkowski has frequently broken with her party on high-profile issues, positioning herself as an opposition leader against Republican priorities.

  1. The good Senator believes that Alaska Natives are incapable of doing something other Alaskans, other Americans, and people all over the world are capable of doing…getting an identification card. Why does the good Senator believe Alaskan Natives are incapable of achieving such an unremarkable act, does she think they are somehow inferior and unable to accomplish basic tasks?

      1. It’s the polite way of saying certain things that aren’t so polite. In person it would be described as sarcasm.

  2. So essentially according to Lisa, our ‘first settlers’ are simply too stupid to figure out how to obtain an identification. Never mind they all have either state or federal identification in order to drive, get on a plane, get medical care, buy alcohol or other controlled substances, etc. Evidently she must believe they are living in igloos, dining on seal, have never seen a plane, nor a doctor, nor ever attended school or driven a vehicle. What a gross insult, except it is all a lie, smoke and mirrors, gaslighting, and all about her abject fear of not keeping her ‘position’ . A disgrace.

  3. That’s bad for Lisa Murkowski when Mike Dunleavy starts his campaign for Senate next year. Again, Lisa has proven to the voters of Alaska that she can’t win an election standing on her own. She needs the cheating Democrats to help her across the finish line.

  4. Every Native applies for the PFD. Every time, they need to provide ID to do so. Lisa is full of it on this one, because it is all about hating Trump, not about serving her constituents.

    1. Perfectly said!!🇺🇸❤️ This is about Americans that have the right to Vote!!! Us the Americans that pay Taxes. We are the ones that have the right to have our votes count. Not people from other Countries.

  5. Nearly all Alaska natives of voting age are enrolled in BIA for their blood quantum to get government funded tribal healthcare. This requires birth certificates, which are proof of citizenship. Can’t get a BIA card without jumping through some hoops. Why then, can’t they meet the citizenship voting requirement? It’s a fear thing – just like leftist tribal leaders inciting fear about ICE agents targeting Alaska natives. Murky Lisa has read the room and believes fear will convince Alaska Natives and lefties to fall in line with her “wisdom” on this issue.

  6. Nancy and I always told Lisa to never vote for something that is against her own best interests. In this case, it’s obvious.

    1. We know the majority of Alaskans wanted Joe Miller and Kelly Tshabaka as their Senator. That’s why we moved to Wrangell. Murkowski shame hasn’t reached these parts yet.

      1. Maybe not Wrangell, but it’s everywhere else in the country. So glad I kept my own last name. I can still hang out in hotel lobbies and pick up chicks without being shamed.

  7. We have to be shed of her!
Her rationale is just ridiculous, because Natives can’t even fly to Anchorage or Fairbanks without photo ID, much less purchase alcohol, cigarettes, etc. Does this matter to TDS Murkoski? Not at all! Her condition blinds her eyes to what 70-80% of Americans say is necessary.
We must get rid of her!

  8. This Woman… ( Lisa Murkowski) is DONE!
#1) Existing voters will continue to be in the voters roll for their precinct.
#2) New voters have a chance to enroll, or change their name before the next election.
#3) This Act merely sorts out unlawful voters in the upcoming elections.
Let’s get rid of the Rhinos and Dinos in office!
Time to rid our elections of the fossils!
No SHARIA LAW in ALASKA or the USA!
No matter how many “ranked choice” votes are cast!!

  9. Bravo Tamra. Further, how are Welfare benefits dispensed without verified ID?
    Pelosi got to Lisa again,,,

  10. I wish just once she could put her pretend love for Alaska above her ugly hate for the president of the United States. Still curious about her name on a Maduro list. I recall her being instrumental in some of Alaska villages getting Venezuela oil.

  11. The Senator represents one constituency and one constituency ONLY – Alaska Natives. Everything and everyone else does not matter. She will bounce around here and there and others might think she is principled, interested and involved but in the end, it is all about her primary constituency.

  12. Her stance is nonsensical, as with very few exceptions, Alaska Natives have to fly to/from at least one airport and either already have a real ID, or they are using an Enhanced Tribal ID Card. Some tweaking to the language might have to be done to ensure that Tribal IDs do indeed meet the citizenship requirements so if she was really concerned about it she would be working to make admendments not just blocking the entire bill.

  13. My observation about Lisa is that she likes to take big stands that put her in the limelight as a courageous non-partisan warrior, but it never makes the difference. To put it bluntly she will not cast that deciding vote. My guess is that she does not believe the Republicans can pull it off with her, so she is safe to be “courageous.”
