Feb. 23, 2026 – The Alaska Young Republicans issued a public statement Monday distancing the organization from its Anchorage chapter chairman, Craig Valdez, following his arrest on charges related to child sexual assault and child pornography.

Valdez, who had served as chairman of the Anchorage Young Republicans and worked as a legislative aide in Juneau, was arrested last week on serious felony charges involving alleged crimes against children. Federal authorities have charged him with offenses that include sex trafficking of children and the production and receipt of child sexual abuse material.

In a statement signed by state YR Chairman Jarret Freeman, the Alaska Young Republicans said members were “shocked and sickened” by the allegations.

“Like every Alaskan who has read the reports, we were shocked and sickened by the charges filed against one individual,” the statement reads. “It is deeply disturbing to learn that someone you worked alongside during the day could allegedly be capable of something so reprehensible at night.”

The organization emphasized that, if the allegations are proven true, Valdez should face the full force of the law.

“If these charges are true, then the full weight of the justice system should come down swiftly and decisively. Crimes against innocent people deserve zero tolerance, zero excuses, and zero defense. Crimes against children warrant the harshest penalties available under the law,” the statement continues. “Let’s be absolutely clear: If someone commits a crime, they should face justice. Period.”

At the same time, the group pushed back against any suggestion that the alleged actions of one member reflect on the broader organization.

“The alleged criminal behavior of one individual is not a reflection of an entire organization, particularly when there was no knowledge, warning or indication of such conduct,” Freeman wrote.

The Alaska Young Republicans described their membership as “serious, hardworking young Alaskans,” noting that members volunteer extensively in campaigns and civic activities across the state. The statement highlights that members include teachers, small business owners, military personnel, tradesmen, parents, students and other professionals.

The organization said it is using the moment to reinforce internal standards and strengthen its structure. According to the statement, the group recently held a successful state convention and has implemented organizational improvements aimed at strengthening its foundation.

“The Alaska Young Republicans are dedicated and committed to organizing responsibly, serving our communities with integrity and professionalism, knocking doors in the snow, and fighting for the future of our state,” the statement concludes.
