US Army raises maximum age for enlistment to 42

By THE ALASKA STORY

March 24, 2026 – Americans in their late 30s and early 40s now have a new path into military service. The U.S. Army has raised its maximum enlistment age to 42, according to updated service regulations published March 20.

The change, included in the newly updated Army Regulation 601-210, applies to the Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve. Individuals up to age 42 can now enlist, whether they have prior military service or not.

Previously, the Army capped enlistment at age 35, though some older applicants were accepted through waivers. The minimum enlistment age remains unchanged at 17 with parental consent, or 18 without.

The update brings the Army more in line with other military branches. The Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard all accept recruits up to age 42. The Navy allows enlistment up to age 41, while the Marine Corps maintains a significantly lower cutoff at age 28.

Army officials said the adjustment is intended to align accession policies with broader Defense Department standards rather than address an immediate recruiting shortfall. Since Trump was elected to his second term, the Army has exceeded recruiting goals and is on track to hit its fiscal year 2026 targets.

This is not the first time the Army has expanded the age window. In 2006, during the height of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the service temporarily raised the enlistment age to 42 to boost manpower. The limit was lowered again to 35 in 2016.
