April 7, 2026 – President Donald Trump announced Tuesday evening that the United States has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, stepping back from what he had earlier warned could become a devastating military strike that might result in the destruction of a “whole civilization.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the pause in hostilities comes after US forces “met and exceeded all Military objectives” and as negotiators move toward what he described as a broader peace agreement.
“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump wrote. “We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”
The ceasefire is contingent on Iran agreeing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for a significant portion of the world’s oil supply, which Trump described earlier as a “very big priority” in the negotiations. He said the two-week window is intended to allow both sides to finalize terms, noting that “almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to.”
Trump also revealed that the decision followed direct conversations with Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who urged him to hold off on planned strikes.
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote. “This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!”
The announcement is a shift from Trump’s tone earlier Tuesday morning, when he warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” if Iran did not reach a deal with the United States.

The president said the pause reflects confidence that a broader settlement is close at hand.
“On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution,” Trump wrote.
The two-week ceasefire now sets a short timeline for negotiators to finalize what Trump characterized as a long-term peace agreement, with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz emerging as a central condition and a potential early test of Iran’s compliance.
