Sen. Mike Cronk chosen as Senate Republican caucus minority leader

The Alaska Senate Republican Caucus has elected Sen. Mike Cronk, R–Tok/Northway, as its new minority leader, marking a leadership change ahead of the 2026 legislative session.

Cronk has served in the Alaska Legislature since 2021. He was first elected to the State House, representing District 36, before moving to the Senate. Before entering public service, Cronk worked as a schoolteacher in Tok, an experience that continues to shape his involvement in education policy, including his work on the Legislature’s Education Task Force.

The role of Senate Minority Leader has changed due to Sen. Mike Shower leaving the Senate to run for lieutenant governor with gubernatorial candidate Bernadette Wilson.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the Republican Caucus,” Cronk said in a statement. “Together, we will bring forward solutions that begin the process of building a vibrant Alaska for our kids and grandkids.”

Sen. Robb Myers, R–North Pole, will continue in his role as minority whip.

“I appreciate my colleagues placing their trust in me again as Whip,” Myers said.

With the leadership change, the Senate Republican Caucus said it plans to adjust committee assignments to reflect the new structure and to provide roles for its newest members.

  1. “Together, we will bring forward solutions that begin the process of building a vibrant Alaska for our kids and grandkids.”
Knowing the Senate Majority that’s a statement of counting the chickens before they hatched 🐣
Its going to be a looooooooong time before Alaskans can think optimistically that Alaska will be a state where other states will send their Millennials, GenZ, GenAlphas adults let alone being a place where our own born and raised Alaskan kids want to stay not just because they are stuck here.

I bet you anything that not even Cronks own children want to stay here if he and his wife educated his children because I know mine doesn’t even want to stay on Alaska when she gets older because she is a smart and recognizes Alaska is not moving forward
