Murkowski eyes gavel for Defense Appropriations Subcommittee

By THE ALASKA STORY

Alaska US Sen. Lisa Murkowski is seeking to take the helm of one of the most powerful spending panels in Congress, signaling a potential pivot from her long-held focus on energy and natural resources to national defense.

According to Punchbowl News, Murkowski wants to succeed retiring Mitch McConnell atop the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, a post that controls billions of dollars in Pentagon funding and shapes military priorities across the globe.

The move would represent a major shift for the Alaska Republican, who has chaired the Interior-EPA Appropriations Subcommittee since 2011. In that role, Murkowski has steered federal funding tied to public lands, environmental programs, and energy development, issues central to Alaska’s economy.

But Murkowski says Alaska’s strategic military footprint makes defense spending equally critical.

“Look at my state. We have a pretty significant military presence, rightly so, because of our geography, proudly so,” Murkowski said in an interview last week with the news outlet, publicly expressing interest in the defense gavel for the first time. “These are important issues, not only for the entire country, but also immediately for Alaska.”

Alaska is home to major installations including Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Eielson Air Force Base, Fort Wainwright, and key missile defense assets. With growing tensions in the Arctic and Pacific regions, Alaska’s role in national defense has expanded in recent years.

Taking over the defense subcommittee would place Murkowski at the center of a massive budget debate. President Donald Trump has called for a $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget, an effective 50% increase over current levels. His proposal has divided Republicans and is certain to dominate the next Congress.

Control of the subcommittee would then give Murkowski significant leverage over how those funds are allocated, including military construction, procurement, and research investments that could directly impact Alaska installations.

Murkowski’s seniority positions her for the role. She is third in line on the full Appropriations Committee behind Chairwoman Susan Collins and McConnell. If Collins were to lose her competitive reelection bid this year, Murkowski could even be in position to chair the full Appropriations Committee, one of the most powerful posts in Congress.

Such an outcome would dramatically expand her influence over federal spending nationwide. The last time someone from Alaska chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee was during Ted Stevens’ tenure. Stevens served as chair from 1997 to 2001.

Murkowski has long followed a model of building seniority, securing key committee assignments, and leveraging them to bring federal dollars home. She previously chaired the full Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and has used her Appropriations role to direct hundreds of millions of dollars toward Alaska priorities.

Holding the defense gavel, potentially overseeing more than $1 trillion in annual spending, would echo the approach taken by the late Sen. Stevens.

Murkowski, who has held her seat since 2002 after succeeding her father, former Sen. Frank Murkowski, is not up for reelection until 2028.

  1. Of course, she does, she can spend! Spend! , all on our credit card. princess definitely has a spending addiction

  2. I could see a possibility that she might encounter some significant opposition from her Republican colleagues in an effort to obtain a larger and more powerful gavel. Being to SOLE Republican to vote with the Left on major issues will eventually have consequences and hurt Alaska.

  3. I have every reason to believe that the White House and Senate leadership would have a very difficult time trusting her with such a powerful chair.

  4. Never trust Lisa to do what she says. Ain’t that right, Joe Miller? And for those who weren’t in Alaska in 2010, Lisa lost the primary to Joe and declared “I will honor the vote of the Republicans in Alaska, and step aside for Joe.” Probably not an exact quote, but close enough for Lisa to break her word, and start a write-in campaign. A campaign that she became beholden to Democrats to. And may have broken rules by getting the state Department of Elections to accept misspellings such as “Murcowsi” or just “Lisa”, and others. Her well documented hate of Pres. Trump makes her a darling of the Left.

      1. Well, that would be just fabulous. So anything good for the country, or the state of Alaska, that might be put forward by Trump, she will have even more power to wreak havoc and disrupt progress, because she despises Donald Trump. Thats why the dems and the associated press love her so much, she does more for the democratic party than she does for the republican party. Yea, give her more power, great plan.

    1. Lisa the liar from the start. Her daddy Frank did us all a huge disservice appointing his little Princess as an AK US Senator! She’s a traitor to the Republican Party! Lisa defines RINO! She fails at everything and now wants to fail at a defense financier!
I must stop my commentary now and go vomit. I’ve written Lisa and I’ve written maggot, and sincerely cannot tell the difference!!

  5. We told Lisa to enjoy it to the max while she has it. 2028 will be the of the line for her and her unemployable house husband. Trumps only campaign tours in 2028 will be to help his Republican friends and to make sure Lisa ends her long appointed career in the US Senate. And house husband can finally start using his married name ….
    Murkowski.

    1. When Vern rolled the dice long ago he wasn’t sure if he was going to be stuck in a noodle stand for life or eating caviar with the Alaska royals. Either way, he still has to deal with an entitled, spoiled-rotten, bitchy old spouse.

      1. Ted,
It’s been an easy ride for me. I’ve been on a work sabbatical since about 1990 and on a wonderful vacation since 2002. I hated the restaurant business.
Frankie gave me the best gift of my life when he appointed Lisa.
BTW, how is life in miserable Anchorage? Are you having as much fun as me?

        1. We always knew we had a moocher SIL. Lounges around the pool all day in Bermuda shorts and flip flops, looking at young girls. Our daughter is hard at work trying to embarrass Donald Trump whenever we can, yet Frankie and I have to live in embarrassment with our lazy SIL.

          1. I thought you and Frankie moved to mudslide Wrangell. I’ve always wondered how the good people in SE Alaska liked having the Murkowski family clan as neighbors.

  6. The thousands who were moved to tears by Senator Murkowski’s impassioned defense of the SBA 8(a) program probably shouldn’t read this story at dailywire.com/news/how-a-top-pentagon-contractor-enriches-dc-insiders-using-a-law-intended-to-help-eskimos.
    .
Starts with: “”Alaska native” firms, most often in Virginia, were paid $45 billion in Pentagon contracts thanks to DEI law.”
    .
    And the pictures… don’t look.
    .
Murkowski gets the gavel, now it’s Senator-For-Life, a Senate CEO in charge of moving vast amounts of money in the right direction.
    .
Senator-For-Life? Just like in Alaska, nobody important wants some stupid election messing up the orderly flow of money and power, So it takes a few dark-money dollars to keep your CEO in office, that’s just the cost of doing business, no?
    .
If you accidentally saw the “Daily Wire” pictures, you know this matters, you know why the next two pieces are no coincidence.
