July 5, 2026 – Anchorage singer-songwriter Tom Begich, running for Alaska governor, is promoting a social media account with a reputation for highlighting Democratic-leaning surveys as evidence that Democrats are poised to win the Alaska governor’s race, something that has not happened in nearly three decades.
The Democrat recently promoted a post from the X account USA Polling (@USA_Polling) that suggested Democrats are leading in Alaska’s 2026 gubernatorial contest. The account is not a polling firm conducting its own scientific surveys. Instead, it functions primarily as an aggregator of cherry-picked polls, election models, and political commentary.
The account openly describes itself as providing “Polls, Data, Shitposts, Opinions,” blending election data with political commentary and humor. While it cites polling from organizations such as YouGov, Quantus, and other firms, the account amplifies polling and projections favorable to Democratic candidates and causes.
Tom Begich is likely trying to edge out a Democrat challenge from Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, who may be taking votes away from him.
Tom Begich, a longtime Democratic political strategist from a politically sophisticated lineage, is well aware of the distinction between a polling aggregator and an independent survey organization. His decision to circulate the graphic appears designed to reinforce a narrative that Democrats are suddenly competitive for Alaska’s highest office.
History suggests otherwise.
The last Democrat elected governor of Alaska was Tony Knowles, who won re-election in 1998. Since then, Alaska voters have elected Republican governors in every gubernatorial election, including Frank Murkowski, Sarah Palin, Sean Parnell, Mike Dunleavy, and Bill Walker’s 2014 victory, which came as an independent in a three-way race rather than as a Democratic nominee. Walker had been a Republican but then switched at the last minute.
Polling has faced increasing scrutiny in recent election cycles. Nationally, many polling firms consistently underestimated Republican and Donald Trump support in 2016, 2020, and 2024. This is due to a persistent non-response bias (Republicans don’t participate in these polls as much as Democrats) and other methodological challenges. That history has prompted many political operatives to treat individual polls, and especially social-media summaries of polls, with greater caution.
For now, Tom Begich’s promotion of the graphic appears to be as much about his attempt to shape political perceptions. In politics, influencing expectations can be almost as valuable as winning votes. By circulating favorable polling early, campaigns can energize supporters, attract donors, and encourage media coverage suggesting momentum, even when the historical odds remain steep.

Disagree. Walker was definitely a democrat, had a democrat pedophile Lt Gov.
“………Tom Begich is likely trying to edge out a Democrat challenge from Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, who may be taking votes away from him……….”
If Kreiss-Tomkins makes the final four in the primary, and he splits the Democrat vote with Begich in the general election, watch the Democrats go to war with ranked choice elections.
