Murkowski presses Hegseth on Iran war powers as Trump administration claims authority to strike without Congress

By THE ALASKA STORY

May 12, 2026 -War Secretary Pete Hegseth told Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski on Tuesday that President Donald Trump already has all the constitutional authority needed to resume military operations against Iran without seeking a new authorization from Congress, setting up another clash over presidential war powers and the role of lawmakers in approving extended conflicts.

The exchange came during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on the Pentagon’s proposed fiscal year 2027 budget, estimated at roughly $1.5 trillion. Murkowski pressed Hegseth on whether the administration would seek congressional approval if the United States restarts major combat operations against Iran.

Hegseth responded that the administration believes the president already possesses the authority to act.

“Senator, our view is that should the president make the decision to recommence, that we would have all the authorities necessary to do so,” Hegseth said, adding that the president has “all the authorities he needs under Article II” of the Constitution, referring to presidential commander-in-chief powers.

The current conflict traces back to “Operation Epic Fury,” the coordinated US-Israeli military campaign that began Feb. 28, targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, missile infrastructure, and military assets. President Trump formally notified Congress on March 2 under the requirements of the 1973 War Powers Resolution.

Under the War Powers Resolution, presidents are generally required to end hostilities within 60 days unless Congress authorizes continued military action or grants an extension. That deadline expired in late April.

The administration maintains the timeline no longer applies because a ceasefire took effect in early April, effectively ending or pausing active hostilities. Trump notified Congress on May 1 that fighting had ceased. Murkowski disputes that interpretation, noting that approximately 15,000 US troops remain deployed in the region, and that naval operations continue in the Strait of Hormuz, and military readiness remains elevated.

Murkowski seeks a more formal congressional role before any renewed military escalation. She has pushed for a specific Authorization for Use of Military Force, commonly known as an AUMF, to define the mission’s objectives, scope, and duration.

The administration maintains that Article II powers provide sufficient constitutional authority for the president to order military operations if necessary.

The issue has become increasingly contentious as the conflict’s costs mount. Estimates discussed during congressional hearings place the price tag of the Iran campaign between $25 billion and $29 billion.

The ceasefire itself remains uncertain. Trump described it as being “on life support,” amid continuing tensions over Iranian nuclear activities and conflicts in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping lanes.

    1. Traitor Lisa Murkowski would tip-off the Iranians of any military operation ordered by Trump. And that’s why Republicans, patriots, conservatives, and thinking people loath Lisa Murkowski. She is such a brainless twit. Hard to believe she is a senator. Low IQ woman and bar exam cheater. What a low life.

  1. Kudos to Murkowski for asking a few tough questions of pretty boy. He and Trump are responsible for the death of thousands of people, 100s of billions of dollars – your dollars – wasted while the rest of us nibble on Cheezits. Because of Trump’s infinite ego, has made America and the world less safe. If he hadn’t torn up Obama’s (a black man) treaty, we’d all be a hell of a lot better off. Maybe you don’t like Lisa, but you gotta hate Trump, the bored, sleepy, grifting felon and little girl pussy diddler. That around 33% of Americans still approve of him astounds me.

    1. So, you think President Obama’s completely non-binding treaty that Iran never signed was going to keep the terrorists in line.
That’s hilarious, or at least it would be if it wasn’t a delusion shared by some D’s in DC.
Your sex fantasies about President Trump are just disgusting, please keep those to yourself.

      1. Trump’s sexual exploitation of innocents is indeed disgusting. I agree with you.

The Obama plan has flaws but it’s better than Trump’s WWIII.

      2. Mark:

The reason I use terms like “little girl pussy diddler” is to remove the blandness and uncertainty of typical terms used in the media like, sexual violence, sex without consent, rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, grope, sexual offense, violation, intercourse, oral sex. These terms can be used to describe any, nonspecific awful sexual exploitation event. But to absorb the disgust, the anger and horror of what Trump and Epstein and who knows how many other men did to girls as young as THIRTEEN YEARS OLD, it requires a more vivid picture, something that you can visualize and feel its power and react accordingly. I don’t have children but imagine, as a father, if you learned that your daughter bit the penis of Donald Trump and he assaulted her.

  2. ‘Ol Hunny Bunny (aka: Daddy’s Little Princess) might want to do her homework, refer to Constitutional precedent – law, if she remembers how to and what, to only realize the Trump Administration is correct. Recommend she doesn’t over-extend her judicial arrogance – ignorance, succumbing to her TDS, and embarrassing not only herself but also any-n-all Alaskans who might’ve “errantly”voted for once before.
Stay in your lane “Honey Bunny” and work with Sully & NB3, focus on delivering meaningful legislation that deliver meaningful results – outcomes for Alaska and Alaskans.
Otherwise … “Honey Bunny,” get outta the way and let someone else take the helm!

  3. Suzanne, you chose the perfect picture of Princess Lisa for this article. She gets loonier and uglier (inside and out) by the day.

    1. Perfect picture of Lisa….she always spews crap simultaneously from both ends, just got caught on tape this time!

  4. When Hegseth brought up the constitution, the discussion was over, Murkowski knows nothing about it.

  5. Her dIMOCRAP handlers always have her undermine the President when he is on an important trip. It’s intended to detract and use her extreme TDS to undercut our country’s goals. She should be flushed from the Republican Party and her limousine life style.

  6. Her picture speaks volumes and clarifies her disgusting attitude and lack of common knowledge regarding the US Constitution.
