A day of congressional resignations and disparate media coverage: Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas

By THE ALASKA STORY

April 13, 2026 – Rep. Tony Gonzales, a Texas Republican representing a border district stretching from San Antonio to El Paso, announced Monday that he will resign from Congress following mounting  pressure tied to allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member who later died by suicide.

Gonzales, a third-term lawmaker who had already been locked in a contentious primary battle, said he would formally step down when Congress reconvenes.

“There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all,” Gonzales said in a social media post. “When Congress returns tomorrow, I will file my retirement from office.”

The resignation follows the public release of text messages that appeared to document Gonzales’ pursuit of a young female staff member. The relationship has been described by critics as coercive, and the situation intensified after the woman later took her own life.

Gonzales had already withdrawn from his reelection bid last month as the controversy deepened, but calls for his immediate resignation grew louder in recent days as more details circulated among members of Congress and in national media.

Gonzales, who first won his seat in 2020, built his profile as a Republican willing to occasionally buck his party, particularly on border and immigration policy. But the allegations and subsequent fallout quickly overshadowed his legislative record and political positioning.

With his resignation, the House will soon face a Republican vacancy, setting up a special election in Texas and adding to a period of unusual turnover in Congress driven not by electoral defeats, but by scandal.

His announcement came just hours after Eric Swalwell, a Democrat, also said he would resign amid multiple sexual misconduct allegations he denies. The near-simultaneous departures of lawmakers from both parties marked a rare moment of parallel scandal at the federal level.

Media coverage of the two cases has also drawn scrutiny. The New York Times placed its reporting on Swalwell behind a paywall, limiting broader public access, while its reporting on Gonzales was made freely available, a contrast that has not gone unnoticed in political circles.

  1. “There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all”

You dare invoke the name of the Lord to deflect from your sin and responsibility.

Regina Santos-Aviles is still dead. You have a body on you Tony, as well as dishonoring your family. Repent.

    1. Yes Micah you are right. I share the same grief when I read that or I cringed is more like it for me. Those were poor Chloe of words from a leader with a platform. Because scripture tells us his plan is for our welfare and not to harm us. God had nothing to do with his ill fortune because of his poor choices. He did that to himself. However in scripture as we know in God’s mercy He’ll not be abandoned. That US Representative is probably a baby-Christian that he spent more times going to Republican and Conservative parties than reading the Words of God while and being in fellowship with other brothers of the faith by attending a men’s bible group to help one another.

      1. As for the poor woman she is not without fault of her own actions
Coerced or not, she was an adult woman she could had always just quit the job and found another employment to get away and she made the choice to take her own life
Furthermore being flattered by a man of influence and means giving a young impressionable woman attention (even if its kind of unwanted) would make any young woman confused which makes picking leaders who can handle the weight of the responsibility of leadership and who has discernment that much more important
Lives are at stake and lives are either positively or negatively impacted by the choices of leaders or managers
“I ALWAYS SAY LEADERSHIP POSITIONS ARE NOT TO THE GOAL FOR ANYONE’S CAREER” because of the weight of the position weighs heavy and you will be judged higher and held to greater accountability than if you just stayed a peasant.

  2. “1 Timothy 5:22 advises, “Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure” (ESV). This verse cautions against prematurely ordaining or appointing leaders in the church, as doing so without proper vetting links the leader to the individual’s future sins.“Google Gemini

Too many leaders today been promoted into positions of management or leadership and they were never ready for its weight. For both Democrats and Republicans

    1. It’s not just for the Church. Its wisdom and knowledge for how we should hire and promote people into leadership and management
