Anna Brawley loves this Anchorage neighborhood because it’s just like Ohio

March 23, 2026 – Anchorage Assembly member Anna Brawley, who is running for reelection in West Anchorage, is drawing some attention for praising one local neighborhood because it reminds her of suburban Ohio, the neighborhood of her childhood.

In a recent campaign message, Brawley highlighted the Southport area as one of her favorite places to knock on doors, describing it as a planned community with multiple homeowners associations, a master association, and a mix of housing types.

“Southport, one of the neighborhoods in West Anchorage, is a planned neighborhood that is actually many neighborhoods in one,” Brawley wrote. “It has multiple HOAs and even a super HOA called the Southport Master Association. Although it has many single-family homes, it also has other types of housing, like attached townhomes and condo buildings. It even has a fire station! This is one of my favorite places to talk to folks at doors because it reminds me a bit of the Ohio suburbs where I grew up.”

The comparison stood out to some Anchorage residents who might not instinctively think of Alaska’s largest city as aspiring to Midwestern suburbia, or as needing a “super HOA” to seal the deal.

Brawley, a Democrat endorsed by the Alaska Democratic Party, has lived in West Anchorage since around 2012. Her campaign website says Anchorage has been her home for more than 15 years. She originally moved north for a job with Agnew::Beck Consulting, a planning firm, and from that platform ran successfully for the Assembly in 2023.

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Brawley holds degrees from Denison University, the University of Chicago, and Cornell University, where she studied planning, a background reflected in her appreciation for master-planned developments.

Still, the Ohio comparison offered an unintentionally revealing campaign moment. In a state where political candidates often emphasize Alaska’s uniqueness, including independence, limited regulation, and a distinct local character, praising a neighborhood for feeling like the suburbs of Columbus may not land the same way with every voter.

Brawley, a Democrat endorsed by the Alaska Democratic Party, now breranding themselves as the “Alaska Dems,”  is seeking reelection to the Anchorage Assembly and faces Republican challenger Brian Flynn in the race. Flynn’s website statement has a different message:

“Anchorage should be a city that works, with safe neighborhoodswell-kept streets, and a government that respects taxpayers. We have the people, the character, and the potential. What’s missing is leadership that raises the standard instead of lowering expectations. For too long, the people in charge haven’t represented the values of our district or made real improvements. Instead, we’ve been handed slogansfalse promises, and excuses while problems keep growing. I’m not running to play politics. I’m running to roll up my sleeves and get to workWest Anchorage deserves representation that listensacts, and delivers results. Together, we can bring new heights to West Anchorage with safer streetssmarter spending, and a city that reflects the best of who we are. It’s time to be part of the solution, not stand idly by as witnesses to decline.”

  1. Typical AWFL Karen, just loves HOAs, because they can be used to dump on people she decides offend her in some way

  2. These Democrats of Anchorage I believe they never leave their homes. Or their vision is getting blurred to not see clearly.
Her description if how she is seeing Anchorage is not what majority is seeing and experiencing living on Anchorage.

  3. West Anchorage looks like a Dump today that in 2011-2015 didn’t look great but it was a whole lot better than how it looks and feels to walk on any West Anchorage street.

  4. Home Owners Associations: because tyranny starts at home.
    .
By the way, Brawly, you are not wearing the regulation radical leftist eyeglasses. They need to be even larger, and have even darker and thicker frames. Only in that way can you truly achieve the “retarded owl” look that has become de rigueur among every radical leftist extremist.
