Murkowski doubles down to oppose election integrity

By SUZANNE DOWNING

March 21, 2026 – US Sen. Lisa Murkowski still breaking with fellow Republicans, standing in opposition to the SAVE America Act, a proposal backed by Donald Trump and many GOP lawmakers that would require proof of US citizenship to register for federal elections and photo identification to vote.

As of March 21, Murkowski remains firmly opposed to the bill and was the sole Republican to vote against advancing it in a key procedural vote. The measure cleared a simple majority, 51–48, to open debate but fell short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster, effectively stalling the legislation. Murkowski’s vote contributed directly to that outcome.

In a March 19 floor speech, Murkowski said she supports the concept of ensuring only citizens vote and requiring valid identification, but argued the bill as written would create problems for Alaska. She cited implementation challenges, concerns about rural access, and what she described as federal overreach into elections traditionally managed by states. She also suggested the requirements could disenfranchise voters in remote communities, including Alaska Native populations.

Her arguments undercut the very premise of election integrity and assume rural and Native voters are incapable of meeting the same standards required by other Americans. Alaska already requires identity verification in many election contexts and that obtaining documentation is a routine part of modern civic life, from flying commercially to accessing government services. The bill is aimed at ensuring that the 20 million illegal immigrants allowed into the country by President Joe Biden do not end up as voters.

Murkowski’s stance has reignited longstanding frustration among Alaska conservatives who view her as consistently opposing election integrity efforts. They also point to her role in pushing for Alaska’s adoption of ranked choice voting, which was enacted through Ballot Measure 2 in 2020 and has reshaped the state’s elections. The system has confused voters, delayed results, and weakened traditional party primaries, while benefiting incumbents and candidates able to consolidate support by being part of the mushy middle.

Her opposition to the SAVE Act is now being viewed through that same lens. Supporters of the legislation argue requiring proof of citizenship and photo ID is a basic safeguard to ensure confidence in elections. They also note that nearly all countries, and numerous US states, already impose similar requirements.

Murkowski has instead argued that election rules should remain primarily in state hands and warned against a one-size-fits-all federal mandate. But opponents counter that federal standards already exist for many aspects of elections and that citizenship verification is fundamental to federal contests.

The debate comes as the SAVE America Act appears unlikely to advance in its current form. Without 60 votes in the Senate, the bill is effectively stalled, and Murkowski’s opposition has drawn sharp criticism from Republican activists and Trump supporters, some of whom are again calling for a primary challenge.

For critics, the pattern is familiar: Murkowski breaking with Republicans on a high-profile issue involving elections, citing Alaska-specific concerns, and drawing backlash from voters who say they want clearer, stronger safeguards.

  1. This conduct may eventually cause damage to Alaska’s interests. Senator Murkowski’s Republican colleagues may tire of her antics, kick her out of the Republican caucus and strip her of her membership on the Appropriations Committee. It is not reasonable to assume that she can continue down this path without consequences.

    1. She cites the problems for remote villagers to obtain items necessary to conform to the SAVE act, but in reality it shouldnt be an issue. If they can collect a PFD, social security, and other benefits that require proof of citizenship, then they can do the same to vote. Murkowski is insufferable and her TDS is through the roof. Would someone please get this person out of office? She is a disgrace.

  2. Murkowski is simply not telling the truth. She is the voice of resistance in the worst way. Alaska and every other state and country uses picture ID, drivers license, SS, birthdate, for everything in this world. Alaska is no different. She puts Alaskans in a position of ignorance and incapability. Who does she think she is? The answer is she is of NO account. She is not god. We do it all with God’s help not hers.
    W.

  3. ALL OF US NEED TO SEND THIS DIPSTICK AN EMAIL LETTING HER KNOW OUR OUTRAGE FOR HER TDS AND TOTAL STUPIDITY AND THAT WE’RE NOT GOING TO TOLERATE HER NONREPRESENTATION OF HER CONSTITUANTS!!!! SHE’S GOTTA GO!! AND THE SOONER THE BETTER!!
    There’s a reason it’s all caps.

  4. We have to disclose this truth, or the Murkowski name will forever be tarnished. Lisa flunked the Bar Exam so many times because of the Ethics portion of the Exam. She simply didn’t understand Ethics and honesty. I finally got sick of paying for her damn Bar Exams and bought her exam tutors. Her opponent in 2010, Joe Miller, a Yale Law School graduate and one-time Bar exam taker. He was also a West Point graduate, Army tank commander in Desert Storm, and later a judge. Her opponent in 2022, Kelly Tshabaka, a Harvard Law graduate and one-time Bar Exam taker.
Lisa needed Democrats and uneducated Bush voters to win all of her elections. Write-ins, and Rank Choice Voting. The only time she had no opponent was in 2002 when I unilaterally appointed her to the US Senate. I plead guilty to all Alaskans and I beg for your forgiveness.

  5. “NO” … reasonable and/or responsible and/or respectable person acts in such a manner as Daddy’s Little Princess does. Only a petulant – narcissistic – emotional child does. And, we don’t need this in a elected leader for Alaskans and Alaska.
Bottom Line: She needs to go ASAP, the sooner the better!!!

  6. Frankie, I commend you for being honest with Alaskans. We raised a little Democrat. And you snuck her into the US Senate hoping she would become smarter and conservative. We lost out on that dream. Now we have a traitorous member of our family. One who would gladly assist Democrats to cheat in future elections, including her own in 2028. I am so ashamed we let our party down. I am so ashamed we cheated out some good people. We’ve lost our minds, Frankie.

    1. And your life-long friends are gone too, Nancy. Your Murkowski family has proven without a doubt that greed and selfishness is the most important thing in your life. Hope your Catholic training didn’t get in the way of your pride, cuz you aren’t going to like the finish line when Frankie makes his last pitch. Who’s gonna show up? A bunch of despicable Democrats?…….laughing and snickering at you?

  7. What a ridiculous headline (and an equally ridiculous piece of legislation). Sowing doubt in the integrity of our elections is amongst the most treasonous things ever done by the MAGA cult, and that’s a pretty long list.

    1. Hans, I won’t leave a long list of good reasons to be concerned with the integrity of our elections. Speaking toward Anchorage, I will ask you, though, if you’re aware that mail-in ballots are rejected at twice the rate of in-person voted ballots? The people who foisted this on Anchorage do. Why would they do that? Mr. Constant?

    2. So making voting more secure sows doubt, that’s an odd take there Hans. What about when Hillary Clinton or Stacey Abrahams or any other Democrat sows doubt in the integrity of our elections, is it ok then?

      1. The SAVE approach will effectively disenfranchise many legitimate voters. That’s just what MAGA wants, because the victims will come predominantly from amongst the less fortunate and have a propensity to vote Democratic. A crafty suppression strategy to be sure, but one that is dishonest at its core, unethical, and downright sinful.

        Right on-brand for MAGA, guess.

        1. Do you also think that the poor unwashed masses of the less fortunate bipoc Americans are somehow incapable of doing what people all over the world are capable of doing, do you really think so little of bipoc?

  8. Murkowski was first appointed, then was ‘elected’(?), after losing the primary, by questionable means with her ‘write in’ slight of hand, then we were served the proverbial bill of goods with Rigged Choice Voting, and now here we are. When was Murkowski ever truly legitimately elected by straight honest voting? Of course she doesn’t want election integrity. That would mean the end of her glory days.

  9. One of Murkowski’s arguments is that it is too hard and expensive for native Alaskans to fly to Anchorage to get a voter ID. They can do it when they are in Anchorage for medical care which along with the free flights are paid for by taxpayers.
