Feb. 10, 2026 – Sen. Lisa Murkowski is drawing attention after posting on social media Monday morning that she opposes the federal SAVE Act, legislation that includes voter identification requirements for federal elections.

In her statement on X, Murkowski argued that the bill represents an overreach by Washington, DC, and would improperly federalize election rules that she believes should remain under state control.

“When Democrats attempted to advance sweeping election reform legislation in 2021, Republicans were unanimous in opposition because it would have federalized elections,” Murkowski wrote. “Now, I’m seeing proposals such as the SAVE Act and MEGA that would effectively do just that… Once again, I do not support these efforts.”

Murkowski cited the US Constitution’s Elections Clause, which gives states authority over the “times, places, and manner” of holding elections, and said that Alaska does not respond well to “one-size-fits-all mandates from Washington.”

She also raised concerns about timing, noting that Election Day is approaching and states are already deep into preparations.

“Imposing new federal requirements now… would negatively impact election integrity by forcing election officials to scramble,” she said.

Murkowski’s opposition comes even as voter ID requirements remain broadly supported by the American public, including majorities across party lines.

Recent polling has found that roughly 71% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans favor voter ID laws, making it one of the rare election-related issues with significant bipartisan agreement.

Even Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, a Democrat known for breaking with his party on certain cultural issues, has publicly voiced support for voter identification requirements.

Murkowski’s stance therefore places her out of step not only with most Republicans, but also with a large portion of Democratic voters.

The SAVE Act is a basic election integrity measure that creates national standards for federal elections, needed to ensure confidence in federal elections at a time when many Americans believe that illegal voting is going on.

Murkowski says its a state issue and that Congress should not impose last-minute federal mandates that could disrupt local systems.

Murkowski emphasized that public trust in elections is important, but said federal involvement is not the right solution.

“Ensuring public trust in our elections is at the core of our democracy,” she wrote, “but federal overreach is not how we achieve this.”

  1. Of course she is against it. Strengthening election integrity lessens her chances of staying in power. Her myriad of excuses are just gaslighting. Power and control, and the end justifies the means.

  2. Why does this not surprise me? It’s because Murky knows how to rig the elections and it would restrict her ability to do so again.
WHAT A RINO!!!! We need to get rid of RCV and Murkowski!!! Yesterday wouldn’t be soon enough!!!

  3. This statement from Sockeye Lisa only further demonstrates her inherent arrogance, hypocrisy, corruption and criminality, and her consistent pro-radical leftist, pro-globalist and anti-American agenda.
    .
She is one of the very most loathsome and unprincipled sociopaths of a politician that I have ever seen. And EVERY one of you how ever voted for her bears the guilt and responsibility for the total train wreck that her sordid political career has become. Having been initially handed her senate seat through the outrageous nepotism of her equally arrogant and corrupt father should have instantly disqualified her for office in the eyes of anyone with any sense of justice or morality. Shame on every one of you.

  4. Right. Gotta keep it fluid, keep everything up in the air, keep it open. They have to have the time and the freedom to “find” the votes for their candidate. Basic election rules are like kryptonite to leftists like Lisa.

  5. I’ve been voting incognito since 2010. If I have to show my ID at the polling location I risk getting spat on…….and maybe worse.
Lisa is just trying to protect me.

  6. Will she never exhaust her RINOness? We show ID for about everything else, why not for voting? Clearly, she feels threatened.

  7. Article I, Section 4, Clause 1:

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

The good Senator should probably read the applicable part of the Constitution before attempting to use it to justify her position on this, or any issue. Specifically her the Constitution says, once again, “but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations”
