Sen. Cathy Tilton of Wasilla opened her first chapter in the Alaska Senate receiving a unanimous Senate vote on her resolution aimed straight at the heart of our country’s founding ideals.

The Senate passed Senate Resolution 4, sponsored by Tilton, recognizing the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, known as the nation’s Semiquincentennial.

With every member voting yes, Tilton found herself at the center of a rare show of Senate unity. Tilton was sworn in recently as a senator to replace a vacancy created by Shelley Hughes, who is running for governor.

“The passage of SR 4 is a victory for historical truth and a vital reminder of the principles that bind us together,” Tilton said, following the vote. “Preserving the future of our Republic begins in the classroom. We must equip the next generation with an unwavering understanding of the principles that make the United States a beacon of hope for the world.”

The resolution was backed by the full Senate Republican Minority Caucus. SR 4 lays out four key themes for the commemoration:

  • Honoring the enduring values of America’s founding,
  • Reaffirming federalism and the importance of decentralized government,
  • Encouraging civic engagement among Alaskans, and
  • Urging schools to strengthen civics education so students better understand the structure of the constitutional republic.

Unlike a bill, SR 4 is a simple resolution, meaning it does not carry the force of law and requires no further action beyond Senate passage. It serves instead as a formal “sense of the Senate” statement ahead of the 250th anniversary celebrations this summer.

Tilton wrapped her remarks up about the resolution by calling for a return to civic learning for the next generation, tying Alaska’s recognition of the Semiquincentennial to what she described as the continuing responsibility of citizens to understand and uphold the American system of self-government.

  1. That’s nothing. That’s not unity. It’s just a statement We are Americans like stating your identity or citizenship.
They need to be on Unity that Alaska State Government needs to be rightsized or smaller or less employees, lesser education money, a relinquished UA selling its ownership, and reduced wasteful spending.
That’s unity. if we were to see that between Democrats and Republicans. To do it Scared. Despite the political threats and intimidation by those who will lose wealth and jobs from losing government spending on them.

  2. The problem is if Alaska government leaders Ever rightsize government and eliminate wasteful spending; Alaskans will Need full pfd or the end of year bonus or acting as a buffer or cushion to soften the hard adjustment; so to get Alaskans through the hard times of a state that’s government dependent shedding its government dependency for moving in a more private sector and independent direction
