The State Office of Special Prosecutions has completed its review of a September 2025 officer-involved shooting in Anchor Point and determined that Alaska State Trooper Sgt. Daniel Cox was legally justified in using deadly force.

According to the review, the shooting occurred on Sept. 25, 2025, as troopers attempted to serve an active arrest warrant on Tyler Moyer at the Stariski State Campground. Moyer was wanted on charges of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the first and second degrees.

Investigators found Moyer’s vehicle at the campground. After troopers announced their presence, Moyer exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The review states that Moyer then turned back toward Sgt. Cox while brandishing a large knife from an estimated distance of about 14 feet.

The Office of Special Prosecutions concluded that, under those circumstances, Sgt. Cox’s use of deadly force was lawful.

The case involved members of the Alaska State Troopers operating in the Anchor Point area. With the review complete, no criminal charges will be filed against the trooper.
