Blaze Media says pipe bombs were placed by a Capitol Police officer

A shocking allegation has emerged in the open investigation into the pipe bombs placed near the headquarters of the Republican National Committee  and the Democratic National Committee on Jan. 5–6, 2021, just prior to the Jan. 6 United States Capitol unrest.

According to an investigation by Blaze Media, a forensic gait-analysis software found a 94%–98% match between the walking pattern of a former officer of the US Capitol Police and that of the individual captured on surveillance video placing the devices.

The individual identified by Blaze Media is Shauni Rae Kerkhoff, 31, of Alexandria, Virginia, who served as a USCP officer for over four years before moving on to the Central Intelligence Agency in a campus-security role, the report states.

Blaze Media’s report says its forensic algorithm analysed parameters such as knee-flexion, hip-extension, step length, cadence and variance, producing a 94 % match; the analyst visually assessing the footage considered it closer to 98%.

The report claims the gait comparison used footage from Jan. 5, 2021: Closed circuit TV video of the “hoodie-wearing suspect” walking through an alley near C Street to place a pipe bomb behind the Capitol Hill Club at about 8:16 pm.

The story further notes that multiple sources close to a congressional investigation say evidence has “emerged recently that pointed toward law-enforcement possibly being involved in the planting of the pipe bombs.”

A former FBI special agent, Kyle Seraphin, told Blaze Media that he had been doing surveillance next door to the suspect’s location in the days around Jan. 6 and that the FBI “put us one door away from the pipe bomber within days of Jan. 6 … and we were deliberately pulled away for no logical … investigative reason.” He called the sequence of events “a cover-up” in his view.

The USCP declined to comment on the allegations to Blaze Media, and Blaze reports that Chief Steven Sund said he had no knowledge of anyone in his department being connected to the bomb placements.

A Jan. 2025 report by the Committee on House Administration’s Subcommittee on Oversight noted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has still not publicly identified or charged the person who placed the bombs.

The FBI’s public materials still carry a reward of up to $500,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the pipe-bomber.

The pipe bombs placed at the RNC and DNC on Jan. 5–6, 2021 have long been viewed as potentially part of a diversion preceding or accompanying the larger storming of the Capitol complex the next day.

If Blaze Media’s allegations bear out, especially the claim of law-enforcement involvement, it would raise profound questions about the extent to which the investigation into Jan. 6 remains incomplete, compromised or shaped by internal actors. For Alaska-based media and national observers alike, it underscores the ongoing work of accountability in the post-Jan. 6 era.

The gait-matching finding is not proof of culpability: gait analysis can help identify a person of interest, but it is rarely enough on its own to secure a prosecutable case, especially given issues of video quality, angle, lighting and context.

Blaze Media says its multiple sources confirmed the match, but the outlet has not named those sources publicly.

There has been no public criminal charge or indictment based on these new allegations as of now.

The USCP and FBI remain tight-lipped; no official confirmation has yet been delivered to the public that the person named by Blaze is now the subject of an official law-enforcement investigation.

Given the sensitivity of law-enforcement and intelligence personnel potentially being implicated, the credibility of the underlying evidence and transparency of the investigation will be central to whether this claim advances to prosecution or remains media reporting.

The next step might be congressional inquiries (including the House committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight), which could press for more public disclosure from the FBI and USCP regarding the status of the case.

  1. Blaze only published half the story, which will end up getting them the same fate that Alex Jones got.

Want to prove this is real? You need to show video of the accused walking side to side with video of whomever dropped the pipe bombs off and then drop the analysis to lock in the conclusions.

Alex Jones and his business were destroyed by a group of parents who said he hurt their feelings. Of course the civil suit was funded by a leftist billionaire. I see the same possible fate for Blaze if they don’t do the side by side comparison. To their credit, the perp being hired by the CIA is troubling but not unexpected. Cheers –

    1. Hard to fathom anyone downplaying the misery caused by Alex Jones’s deliberate lies. But you did it Gimarc. Welcome to the bottom.

  2. Careful. “Forensic gait analysis is considered a supportive or corroborative form of evidence, not a primary method for positive identification like DNA or fingerprints, due to ongoing debates about its scientific basis, standardization, and a lack of a comprehensive population database. Its reliability is heavily dependent on the quality of the video footage and the expertise of the analyst.”

    1. OK, this is good to know but we do not know yet if there is additional evidence that implicates this person. An honest investigation, if it happens, may expose some new stuff. There are some strange things about Jan 6. The unlimited pursuit of felony convictions for many at the Capitol was irrational. And there continues to be scary indications of intelligence operatives playing politics INSIDE the USA. If that isn’t chilling, nothing is.
