Here we go again: October is LGBTQ History Month

The American Library Association’s school librarian division offers lesson plans, displays, assemblies and reading lists for students from kindergarten through high school.

THE ALASKA STORY

Sept. 30, 2026 – October begins Thursday, and with it comes LGBTQ History Month. For schools that could not put up a Pride Month book display in June, the American Association of School Librarians has a suggestion: Do it now.

June can be crowded with exams and end-of-year events, the American Library Association division explains on its LGBTQ History Month page. October offers schools another opportunity to feature LGBTQ books and materials. The association also encourages librarians to include those stories in displays throughout the year. Read more at: American Association of School Librarians.

The month dates to 1994, when Missouri high school teacher Rodney Wilson organized teachers and community leaders around the idea of teaching gay and lesbian history. They chose October partly because schools were in session and National Coming Out Day already fell on Oct. 11. Equality Forum, which now coordinates the observance, features one person each day of the month, with biographies, videos and downloadable materials.

The ALA page goes well beyond a history lesson. Under “Professional Learning Resources,” it links educators to LGBTQ-inclusive lesson plans for prekindergarten through 12th grade, along with teaching materials, student storytelling prompts and a coloring book. Its “Learner Engagement Resources” include ideas for exhibits, assemblies, guest speakers and student presentations.

There are reading lists, too. Among the resources the association highlights are books for elementary students in kindergarten through second grade, a grade-banded list for K–12 readers, and recommendations for children and teens from public libraries and other organizations.

The ALA page is a resource guide, not an order to any Alaska school district. It does not establish that a particular school has adopted these lessons or plans to hold an October event. But it shows what a national school library organization is encouraging educators to consider: displays, classroom materials and programming across a wide range of ages.

Parents who thought the school calendar’s LGBTQ programming ended with Pride Month in June may want to look at what their own schools have planned for October.

I know there will be an end to this madness, but — more and more— believe it will not happen in my life time.

  2. Some Alaskan parents are adamant about keeping government standards away from their children. Maybe a good thing. Since we still have freedom and liberty, parents can choose to homeschool or instruct their kids about which books in public schools they think are harmful. This is called responsibility. There are other parents who recognize a broad exposure to the world helps form good citizens and perhaps those parents aren’t afraid.

    1. I actually somewhat agree but with both premises. I think each child is unique in development and a parent can determine when to introduce sensitive or controversial subjects based on that child’s development. Cognitive development is key. We were pretty protective with our kids up into grade school age but began allowing more freedoms and introduced more controversial ideas beginning around age 11ish.

  3. Like I said. Because of Halloween at the end of the month. It makes the entire month a month for the devil to celebrate
Homosexuality/LGBTQIA+ comes from demons and demons are even more active in October.
Millennials and GenZ really need to dis-enroll their children from the public school district. Dis-enrollment starves the beast. The school district loses money

  4. No, it is not.

How fake and gay are sexual deviants. No one likes you and you live desolate lives without purpose and will have no legacy. And for what? Pathetic.

This perversion is often in late empires. It will not last and we will return to a time when it is delt with properly.
