Aug. 13, 2026 – The flood threat from Suicide Basin has ended, and residents are being allowed to return to evacuated areas of Juneau’s Mendenhall Valley, officials announced Thursday.
The 2026 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Unified Command said water levels receded following the latest release from the ice-dammed basin above Mendenhall Glacier. Evacuated neighborhoods are now open to residents only while emergency crews begin assessing the damage, if any. The water did not rise as significantly as in past events.
Officials urged residents to remain cautious around damaged areas and stay away from riverbanks. Drivers should not attempt to cross standing water, which may conceal hazards and can create waves that cause additional damage to nearby homes and structures.
Pedestrian traffic is once again permitted on the sidewalks of Brotherhood Bridge. Back Loop Bridge remains closed while the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities evaluates its safety. Updated road and bridge information is available at 511.alaska.gov.
City and Borough of Juneau Parks and Recreation facilities within the evacuation zone are scheduled to resume regular hours. The Mendenhall Valley Library will remain closed through Friday, Aug. 14.
