July 23, 2026 – The public spoke, and the Anchorage Assembly folded on its months-long effort to create a new Anchorage public safety oversight commission. The plan died Tuesday after extensive testimony revealed deep opposition to the proposal from both sides of the police-oversight debate.
Assembly members did not vote the ordinance down. Instead, no member would second a motion to move it forward following nearly two hours of testimony Tuesday night. Without a second, the proposal died without a vote.
It was the third public hearing on the ordinance since May and the clearest indication yet that the Assembly’s attempted compromise had satisfied almost no one.
Police officers and their representatives argued that the commission was unnecessary, could become hostile toward law enforcement and might encourage officers to hesitate during dangerous encounters. Others have said that the commission, once established, could be given increasingly aggressive oversight powers.
Civilian-oversight proponents said the revised plan was too weak to provide meaningful accountability because it lacked independent investigatory authority, subpoena power ,and access to confidential records.
In the end, the public made the case that the proposed commission was neither needed by those who trusted the existing public-safety review process nor strong enough for those demanding independent oversight of police.
The proposal, AO 2026-62, was introduced in April by Assembly members Anna Brawley and Kameron Perez-Verdia and former Assembly member Felix Rivera. It went through multiple rewrites, work sessions and public hearings before reaching Tuesday night’s impasse.
The latest version would have created a community-led Public Safety Partnership Commission to advise the mayor and Assembly, review public-safety policies, hold hearings and make recommendations.

Because of the people Anchorage and Alaska enforcement confront. The people are either narcissists by overt or covert. Imagine police officers confronting a person struggling with narcissism because of either they are or they were raised by a Narcissist parent and family relatives, the person police are dealing with would be extremely volatile, hostile, combative because their whole life is thinking they are a victim.
Sorry to say this but Most of Boomers, GenXers, Millennials struggle with Narcissistic traits. Likely because boomers are the narcissists and they raised GenX and Millennials and they had to endure, survive, and live around the Boomer. Whether or not you realized it you learned your parents pattern.
For police officers to not only protect themselves and others from the person they are confronting, they second guess themselves and their actions when in that explosive situation.

And the Native Movement you have to recognize their staff and board are narcissistic GenXers and Millennials likely that way because they were raised by narcissistic boomer parents, and the Native Community they are representing are Narcissistic. Unfortunately.
I know these two statements I’m going to get a lot of back talk from others. U get it from people tell offline. I’m getting older and no longer want to play nice to one’s feelings if I have to tell the truth.
Police are more heavily scrutinised than any other profession. Imagine asking teachers to wear body cameras and the leftist would explode with rage. Every decision police officers make (often in a split second) gets recorded, replayed and second guessed for sport. Police work is a profession of service and police often interact with the public when that person is having the worst day of their life. And they do in every single day. This “commission” was an attack on police by the same people who want to defund them. Glad it died. It should have.
The police union did not like it. Case closed.
